I can attest that he is now older than dirt !!!! There's proof my hair wasn't always white ..... 
That was a great old car. I believe it was originally built by Don Hein out of Roseburg, Oregon. I bought it from Bob Cochran and ran it in the early seventies. Did pretty well in it, including winning the Sky Valley segment of the Dirt Cup and several open comp races there. Also won the Washington State Dirt Track Championship in '73 with it.
Sold it to a guy in Alaska. He bought the car, trailer and all the spares. I never did meet him. He bought it after being down here and seeing it run and from pictures I sent him. I took it to a freight terminal and backed it into a container and sent him the key to the padlock. He did pretty well with it up there I understand.
I believe the car in the background is a Ram car that was built for Cochran Electric for Neil Honka to drive.

Glad you saw my post Dick, ans thanks for the bit of history on it. I found it while looking at an old photo album. Here's another on I found I know you'll have some stories about.

Another oldie moldie for sure ..........
Gordy Stewart in the Bob McLees owned "My Mistress" taken at what looks like Sky Valley in the early seventies. Probably in a WRA race or one of the open comps they had there.
The first year I raced at Skagit a fellow racer asked me to drive his car in the C main. Since I was already qualified in the main with my car, a Ford 6 cylinder ex Luke Phelps car, I asked my hero Gordy Stewart to drive my car. I thought I would be a smart a** and when I passed him I reached out to wave and promptly spun out in front of him and he promptly waved back as he went by. One of my more embarassing moments to say the least. 
Gordy and I still meet for breakfast and a couple of pool games whenever I am up there or he is down here.
What great memories those old photos bring to mind ................. thanks again for posting them.

I'm not sure why it went away. Pretty sure it started with the boats.
That 7w was named "The Godfather" since Gary Merlino of Gary Merlino Construction Company sponsored my car in the beginning and the movie was out.
That was quite a sight in the early days since I towed it with a black Mercury Marquie town car, my crew chief Gordy Adams had a black Chrysler New Yorker and the other crew guy had a black Lincoln Continental. I couldn't figure out why Jim Murphy in his push truck at Umatilla wouldn't push me until he told me he was afraid of getting eliminated. Had to laugh over that one. At a Clark Marshall car show Mario Andretti was the celebrity and he came down to the car because he had heard about the name on it. Took some pictures with him and had a few laughs about the name.
The 17w car was called the "Insulation Service Special" after my partner, Bob Barr's, company.
For some reason that was the last one with a name .............

We name our engines. TJ's current engine is named Gary.

| Maybe it has to do with everybody buying their chassis now. It's not quite as personal and it already has a name like "Rocket", "Maxim", "Jetmod", or "Dirtworks"etc. Spending that much time finding parts and building it, it probably was kind of like naming your dog. Just guesses, I'm not quite old enough to know for sure.

As for the reasons we put a name on the car was purely for fan appeal. It seemed that the fans were used to identifying with a car name. "The Bardahl Special" etc.
That used to be the thing to do in the 50's, 60's and early 70's. Probably started by Andy Granatelli and some of the early Barnum and Bailey style promoters back in the hey day of midgets and big cars.
I know we had a lot of fans come to the car and comment on the name and the lettering style.
There were lots of little things we did then to gain fan support that have gone by the wayside. Cars and drivers up in the stand area before the races. Autograph tables prior to the races.
It was always a rule with our team that the car was turned around and facing out after the races and Shawna was standing in front of it to greet the crowd. Now it seems a lot of the drivers are hiding in their trailers pouting or too busy loading up to spend the quality time with the fans.
Match races were very popular with the fans too.
See what happens when you unleash old memories from an old timer ............ aren't you sorry you asked ? With all this brain drain it will be time for a nap soon and it's only 7 in the AM.

Allot of the cars named as special were direct attempts at sponsor recognition. I spent many hours as a kid cleaning and polishing the pizza hut special prior to heading out to Ascot on Saturday afternoons. Back in the day there was always a best looking car award and trying to win it was a good way for a kid who wasn't old enough to be in the pits to participate. That and getting to stop at pizza hut to fill up on pizza and root beer on the way home made it all worth while.

Boy, you got me on this one. Definetely Sky Valley, probably mid 70's based on the Firestone right rear, Don Bingham's 17 car in the back ground, recognize the trailer behind the station wagon but don't remember who's it was for sure. The cage looks like it might be a Grant King car or copy of one. Sponsor doesn't ring a bell either.
Jim Marshall might know if he reads this thread.

Dick,
What brought about, or how did the evolution in Wings occur and the, I believe its called - the upright / down tube chassis evolve.
Most of the older cars have that roadster look to them, and did those first Wings actually work?
Chris Economaki said the death of the midgets was the Curtis. When the Curtis arrived it ended the building of midgets in one's own garage or backyard.
Did the same thing happen with the chassis for the big cars?

What I remember is seeing, I think, Erv Westby,(not sure about the spelling) brought it up to Sky Valley the first time I saw it, then in this picture, Mike Blackstock drove it. Does that help out any? I might be wrong about who had it first. I know there was a father and son Westby, but don't remember both their names.

For the life of me I can't remember his name....also drove for awhile when Sky Valley went to the pavement at Evergreen.....dang!!.....lol. And I see a much younger Mike Blackstock in a drivers uniform.

It was a RAM . Same frame as the one to the left. I remember Irv Wesby as the owner and Blackstock driving it at Sky Valley.
Possibly someone could clear up my foggy old brain. For some reason I thought Ernie Koch owned the #23 My Mistress that Gordy drove.

I know my grandpa owned a car for Lloyd Army, and yet ive not seen any pictures of it. Im thinking 11x14 print of a current race car of there choice to anyone that can find one for me!

You are correct the 23 car was the Ernie Koch car. Can't believe I called it the McLees car. My old brain skipped a beat on that one for sure. Thanks for correcting it ...........

That was the same Brownfield built car that I drove for Warren. I wanted to go back into retirement and Warren put Lloyd in the car for part of the 84 season. He sold it after that season. It carried the 56w number and was the same color.

Warren bought the car from Fred Brownfield in August of 81 and sold it at the end of 84. It was bought by someone in the Oregon area I believe.

| I believe the rear engine car is Dave Bowling from California. I remember him running a conventional San Jose Super for a couple of IDCs and then showing up with this rear engine car. Seems like he also ran it in the Golden State Classic (California's version of the IDC) and also took it back to Ohio to run.

I think that Irv Westby first drove that 0 in 1977.
Dave Bowling won a Golden State Classic race in 1973 driving a super. He ran the rear engine car in 1974.
The GSC and IDC races were the best asphalt races of their time. They featured the largest and most diverse field of cars seen, every type of car from San Jose coupes, rear engine, Sprints, roadsters and even a dune buggy at the Clovis stop of the GSC. Those where the good old days!

| Looks like the picture was taken at Elma. Gene Pierce 73 is in background. I think this was from 1973, the same year Bob and Dick had a match race with the 7w pictured above. Drifter can speak more on that.

| Forgot to add that Gerry McLees won the year ending 100 lap race at Evergreen in this car in 1971. That was 100 laps on the 5/8's with NO FUEL STOPS! Today the put in a can at every yellow.
