Fletch is advising that I am required to report on our travels, regardless of how they go. So, with that....
We've been back there 6 times, gotten to race twice. First was the outlaw show, and then 2 weeks ago, we got to run our first regular season show. With this, due to some odd position of the sun and moon, fletch was allowed to go with us. So there are pictures!
It was a cool weekend to go back, as the Midget Nationals were running Friday and Saturday night, and there was an ASCS national event (ASCoT) on Friday, and then us and the midgets on Saturday.
Fletch obviously brought the rabbit's foot, as good luck started Friday night when Woody called and said that he was able to score suite tickets in the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame. And these weren't just any tickets.... Woody's boss is 1/2 owner of the Hall of Fame, the famed Rassmusen team (55), etc. So this was top floor center. What an AMAZING view of the midgets and ASCS race.
Saturday night, there were 31 410s. Given the weekly field there (Lasoski, Wimmer, Henderson, Zindi, Tatnell are running for points) is so tough this year, honestly my goal (aim high!) was to make an A feature by the end of the season.
We were 7th out to qualify, and we qualified 11th quick overall, which was outstanding for us. Made it through the heat race, and there was one car that didn't. Lasoski was fast time (.3 faster than us) and he drew a 10. It just so happens that our own Travis Cram had been 10th quick, so guess what the front row of the A feature at KNoxville looked like?  Derek on the pole, Travis on the outside.
I have to say, the fairy tale kind of ended there... we were real fast on the bottom in the heat, so we set up for there. As I watched the midget feature, I saw the bottom go away, and a nasty curb build up on top, which we were too tight for. While that amazing motor helped me beat Travis into the first turn on the start, it was a race to the back from there Travis led half the feature before gettied tied up with a lapped car - he had nowhere to go. Was 3 seconds ahead at the time also.
Overall it was a great night... wish we would have done better in the feature, but trying to be realistic with the expectations and slowly checking off boxes. Qualifying that good was a huge shot in the arm, we had a tough heat race and made it through, and honestly being on the front row of the A, with Travis, was a dream come true.
Back to Knoxville this weekend for twin feature night. Get to run two A mains - the second one inverted. Lots of laps, which is just what we need.
Oh, and Fletch signed the wall at Dingus. In style. And since he was there, I have a great momento of my front row start.
