My wife and I had the pleasure of having lunch with our friend Fred Rannard Jr at the Yakima fair on saturday afternoon. We talked about a ton of stuff and one of the things that Fred said would be cool to hear was one memory from everyone about the Northern Sprint Tour. So here it is. Go ahead and throw out one of your favorite memories you had in the last 11yrs. This should be alot of fun.. The floor is yours! Go fer it

In Cottage Grove the track was rough an cars were bouncing all over the place. I believe it was Rutz who was like Jesus walking on water, smoothed out the track and lapped all but one to win the race. What a riot!
My favorite non-memory is any drinking event the night before an NST race.

I was there that night! It was AMAZING watching that Crazy Canadian do the unbelievable! Was way proud of him! That track was a mess and he made it work by the end of the night! There was never a dissappointing NST race!

I must agree there is not bad memory in the bunch. Wish I could have seen more.

| I gotta agree with that night Rutz won at CG! Man turn two was a bear that night, and Rutz was about the only one who figured it out! Don`t know if this counts as NST, but how about the night young Kasey Kahne in a 360, held off Kinser for 7 laps of an 8 lap heat race at Elma! Man that was great!

I didn't have the opportunity to be there, but I did get a play by play, or rather race by race, update from my son, I would say, it had to be;
TRAVIS JACOBSON BEATING KASEY IN THE A- MAIN, OR BETTER YET JUST WINNING THE A-MAIN

All the races I was able to make it to, were memorable. There are 2, however, that stick out most in my mind;
1st, was just after the attacks on the World Trade Center (9/11). The majority of the tracks across the country were cancelling, yet the Grove went racing. The officials, drivers, etc were on the front stretch for the National Anthems, and the fire & aid units took the trucks out on the track for a "memorial lap".
The second, had to have been this past July, in Elma. Had a few friends in town to see Kasey. When Jay made the pass for the lead (still get goosebumps)........In the 8-9 years that we have been sitting by her, don't recall a time when I have seen Jay's sister Joann more nervous. The spark that we have come to be so familiar/associate w/ GHR came back in a big way that night.
Overall, just the road trips, the friends, etc......

Thanks for the memories guys. Good luck to the future series.

Yep, I remember that wild ride, then a month or so later Danny Woods went thru at the same spot!

Well I only saw 6 Northern Sprint Tour races and one that is etched im my memory was the Speedweek stop at Willamette this year. I had heard a lot about Marc Huson but had only seen him race a handful of times. He flat out had the field covered and was well on his way to a victory when a lapped car spun and took him out of the race with just 5 laps left in the main event. It sucked and let the air outta the whole place!
I think Danny Horner's dominating run at the Cottage Grove stop during Speedweek this year was something amazing as well. The track took rubber and he litteraly made the rest of the drivers look like rookies. I mean this wasn't any light field, it had names like Kaeding, Kent and Sides. Nobody had anything for Horner that night, simply an amazing performance.
I just hope the NSCS keeps the Speedweek so I can get up to see the talented 360 drivers of the NW again next year. I really trully enjoy the Northwest Speedweek.

I was going to mention that but could not remember if was the same year or not, and who it was.
Also remember someone taking down the fence in turn one of Cottage Grove, peeled it right off the posts, almost wrapping up the car! Then Dallas going thru the turn four fence couple of weeks ago!!

That was Jeff Swindell, and he had the car back out before they got the fence fixed!
Were you there the year the power went out during the WOO A main? Total darkness, man that was scary. I thought when the lights go on we are gonna see a mess! Nobody wrecked!!!

I know when Bill and Wil Kennedy hooked up and ran Speedweek together, Bill took down the fence in turn one. Bill was in third place and was absolutely flying and getting ready to pass 2nd place when something broke in the front end and put him into the fence. He got wrapped up tight in the fence just like the Swindell incident.
I remember Bill getting fed a wheel by Bud Kaeding and going end over end 6 times in Cottage Grove Speedweek! Hey, its a memory! Our first and only trip to the hospital together! Knock on wood!

That actually happened two years in a row!
First year the power box at the speedway went up in flames, then the next year a city power transformer went up in smoke.

Sprintinpt must have seen Bill, cause Swindell did it in turn 4 , right in front of me! I`ll bet that`s a memory you could do without Michelle! I remember Bill taking a tumble like that at Elma WOO. I think Kinser was in it too, but he got off easy.
I remember the years following the power loss, somebody made sure there were generator lights on both ends of the track!
Does anybody remember the tree people on the backstrech at Elma? They really got creative with the lawnchairs tied to the tree and a bucket to hoist up brewskys. What ever happened to them?

WOW! You all have mentioned many that I have also. Some of mine are making every race for the first 5 yrs except Edmonton.
The 4th of July shows at the Grove were one of the best.
The smile on Freds face the first time we had 50+ cars at Medford (priceless)
Jays win at Evergreen Sprint Challenge..., but number 1 would have to be..
All the folks, officials, promoters, car owners, drivers, sponsors etc that we have met along the road these 11 great years. I said at Yakima that this is a people driven sport and the NST has some of the best. It was great to meet and become friends with many of them. For that, we say.... THANKYOU

Yes Mark I do remember that night, but it was the dash when he went over the turn one fence. That night made me an instant Marvin Smith and crew fan. The racing that night was a side show to watching Marvin and his crew get that car repaired.
There is no way in the world I can come up with one memory. I have only been going to NST events for the last 5 years and every night was a memory in and of itself.

Man there are so many. Mine would have to be at Yakima when Brandon Harkness spun and the car was facing the wrong way, and his front wheels came up, and he landed on his side.
Seth Bergman getting his first win.
Terry McCarl winning the night before the World Of Outlaws.
Shawna Wilskey winning the ESSC
Jay Cole winning the ESSC
There are so many more. If I think of any I will post more.

Here is one I was reminded of over the weekend: It was a few years back and we had loaded our van as usual with a crowd to go down to the Grove and watch. They asked for donations for former NST racer Mike Morelock's son who was ill (forgive me for not remembering exactly what the illness was) .... Tad Smith now cruiser driver that was with us challenged the rest of the crowd and said that if they got up to $500.00 he would match it. I just remember that the rest of our group got over half way there and the rest of the crowd easily exceded the $500.00. It was a great feeling that got even better when Russell Leach came and got every one of our group and moved us up to one of the box suites. Can't tell you much about the racing but man it was a night of great feelings in the stands.
NST did alot of good in alot of ways!

I was not there but I do know that Jay was frustrated enough that he and crew loaded up, left from the track and did not stop until home.

nost memories where do you start? how about that final night at yakima couple years ago when Solwold running right on the wall last lap pass for the win boy was he excited, or the saturday race of the evergreen sprint chalenge when rickie fauver in the 5sp held off BK for the win, or the night jay passed Sides and kasey and drove off was that great. But the best memory of all would be just having been able to be apart of the wonderful excitement that the nost brought to what ever racetrack we were at. thanks to all my family and I will miss you all.

Sure do Carcrash, and the Fred Rannard comment, he's running the half mile w/ the horses, if I remember correctly (or something similar to that). That was classic!! Have it on tape..... Was under the old configuration of Elma, went over in turn 2, went to the work area, and came back out. Crowd reaction was something else too.

| I’ve always liked the way Fred announced. Whether you are a veteran race fan or your first race, he would suck you into the event and make you feel part of something big. His sayings, “Pitter-Patter Let’s Get Atter”, and others are great. Our family uses them around the house, we’ll except for, “Stacked Like Pamela Anderson” used when the cars are starting off of turn 4. I think the announcer makes the race for the fans and Fred does that. I hope his future plans will include the new series.

That's also part of my memory of the incident. I had to work early Monday morning and I left right after they dropped to checkered, to drive straight home. I passed Jay somewhere around Missoula. Those were the days when the Montana speed limit was reasonable and prudent. Now your asking racers what reasonable is. I think I have too many memories to list! One of the biggest is the championship, each win, even the 2nd place to Rutz on that memorable night when Rutz lapped the field except Bill.
But more important than the racing is the people. What a great, great group the Brownfields surrounded themselves with. Travis Brearty, one of the best, if not THE best flagman on the West Coast who told me he is retiring after Yakima. Fred Rannard Jr, my favorite announcer of any of the series and/or tracks I go to. Larry Kelly, Bob Valencia, and all of the staff are fantastic, and never dropped the ball after it was handed to them.
But Fred and Debbie Brownfield are some of the nicest, classiest people I've ever known. If you could earn their respect, you knew you had some worth as a human being.
Hopefully we can all still hook up next year, and continue reliving the memories.
I will still accept submissions for Freds Memorial album, just PM me.
Michelle Nutter (Sorry if I have ever offended anyone, or got too crazy-racing wives are the worst I've been told!)

I think my favorite memory of all would be just being a part of the show. It didn't matter whether you were first or last, the fans still thanked everyone for putting on the best show they had ever seen. The people I have met, the friends I have made, the hero's I got to race with, all because of Fred and the NST. The series was awesome, always walked away with the feeling that you just raced with the best in the West, and became a better racer because of it.
One of my great memories was in 2003, doing Speedweek by myself, sitting in the Hot Tub at Cottage Grove until about 4:00 AM, with Jay Cole and his crew. What a night!!! I hope the annual Speedweek continues, too much fun for it to go away.

I just thought of another great memory-Casey Diemert winning the first NST race held in Oregon (Cottage Grove)-and the first all Oregon podium.

Watching a young Kasey Kahne pick his way through traffic with the help of a few yellows, then race Lindsey Casto (in the red #40?) for the lead wheel-to-wheel for what seemed like ten laps (including a couple of restarts) until Kasey finally prevailed with a half lap or so to go to win the A at Elma in May of 1998 or 1999. Incredible nerve, poise, and bravado from both drivers.

I have only been following the sport for 3 or so years, so I have seen maybe 10 or 12 NST races. For me, the most memorable had to be Jay winning the ESSC this year. Especially when he passed KK for the lead. The crowd went absolutely wild where I was sitting. Also, opening night at GHR in 2005 (which
fauver won) when a car flipped up and tore part of the front straightaway fence down. I completely enjoyed every NST race that I saw, however.

| WOW, These are some great memories everyone came up with. I didn't make it down there much as my son raced at Skagit but when we did, Fred and Debbie made it so much fun and were so hospitable and visited with you and Debbie was always there for a big hug. don't think there EVER is or EVER will be better track promotors in the whole world. I do know Shawna and Dick will do thier best and I am behind them 110%, now we go forward and make new memories! Thanks for sharing, its nice to see so many happy times were had by all!
