This Saturday September 20th marks the 4th Annual Wilson Auto Brokers U S Hornet Nationals at Skagit Speedway and for the first time we are adding a Demolition Derby to the event! On Sunday afternoon September 21st, we are holding an exciting 200 lap Hornet Enduro!
See the top Hornet drivers from across the state as they battle for the $500.00 first place prize at the 4th Annual US Hornet Nationals. Defending champion Cory Swatzina is looking to win his second straight Nationals event. Then on Sunday afternoon Skagit Speedway will host it's first ever Hornet Enduro. Cars will race in 3 segments. Broken up into 80, 80 and 40 lap sections. There will be a 10 minute break between segments to allow refueling, tire changes and driver changes (Driver change optional). How bad did it rain on Saturday? What kind of shape was the track in after all that rain on Saturday? Rain Gods must not have like Skagit as that place was just soaked at 1 pm on Sunday.

It poured Saturday and was raining like the dickens when I got out of town at 230 Sunday afternoon. I've been at Skagit quite a bit over the years, and when I got up Sunday morning, and saw the grounds, then peaked at the pits, then looked at the forecast, then saw the radar I was pretty sure it would be cancelled at 9am. Steve put off the call till almost noon. Steve wanted to wait as long as he could before making the call. But when the storms started gathering just south of the track and kept pushing through there was no way it was going to happen. It would have taken a couple hours to get the track ready. There was no way anyone was going to sit on the rain soaked bleachers (They were soggy). And the pit area was the worst of the situation, I think the track would have been fine. So a late start, and then to have that late afternoon storm approaching, would have meant a lot more unhappy campers. It was the right call.
As for rescheduling. The window of opportunity to get new clay on the track and everything done in the post season closes fast. It takes time to do that project, among others to close down and winterize the entire facility before the fall and winter weather comes. I doubt with that in mind that there will be a make-up weekend for HONATS.
There are very few racing events left at anyone's track in 2008 here in Washington State. Weather, cold, high school sports, college football, are all reasons why tracks do not schedule too deep into September. Time to winterize the microphones and put away the pens for this announcer for the season. I'm ready for the off-season. Thanks everyone for the great racing shows this year.
