There were fireworks in the sky and on the race track Friday night, July 4, 2008 at South Sound Speedway.

The Canadian Old Time Racing Association made their yearly visit to the West Coast’s fastest 3/8’s mile paved oval. Spokane, Washington’s #25 Justin Robideaux set fast time and a New Track Record with a 15.650. The top three in their A-Heat were winner #5 Jim Rankin from Cobble Hill, BC, Dennis Morneau, and Robideaux. The top three in their B-Heat were winner #39 Hugh Glover from Surrey, BC, Larry Wannamaker, and Terry Cessford.

Chilliwack, BC’s #54 Wannamaker would bring the field down for the green flag start and lead the first four laps. On lap five, the #39 Glover, would take the lead and lead the next three laps until Robideaux made a pass for the lead on lap eight. Spokane, Washington’s Robideaux would go on to win the OTRA 35-Lap Main Event. Rounding out their top five were runner up Morneau, Joe Dardengo, James Campbell, and Jim Rankin.

The AMRS Mini Cup Future Stars saw Tacoma, Washington’s #3 Seth Cooper set fast time with a 17.698. The top three in their Heat were winner #16 Dustin Torrey, Cooper, and Tyler Knittle.

The #34 Knittle would bring the field down for the start, but it was the #2 Parker Stephens leading the first two laps. On lap three, Torrey would take over the lead from Stephens then tangle with Knittle coming out of turn four and both Drivers hit the wall hard and the red flag was out. The Track Officials and EMT’s quickly stepped in to help the Drivers. Knittle was flown by Helicopter to Harborview and Torrey was taken to the local hospital for precautionary tests. When the race was restarted, Tacoma, Washington’s #3 Cooper, driving the S.E.P. Small Engine Performance/Amsoil/Briggs & Stratton Chevrolet Monte Carlo would go on to win the Mini Cup Future Stars Main Event. Rounding out their field were runner up Blake Wood, Kayla Pittman, and Stephens.

The Northwest Baby Grands saw #24 A.J. Butler set fast time with a 15.078. The top three in their Heat were winner Butler, Brooke Lefor, and Cody Stewart.

The #23 Michael Millard-Perales would bring the field around for the start, but it was the #39 Lash Larew leading the first eight laps. On lap nine, Gig Harbor, Washington’s #24 Butler, driving the Xtreme Graphics/Steve Blankenship Trucking Chevrolet Monte Carlo would take away the lead from Larew and go on to win the Baby Grands 25-Lap Main Event. Rounding out their top five were runner up Larew, Stewart, Nik Larson, and Lefor.

The Delta Camshaft Mini Stocks saw Tacoma, Washington’s #56 Dennis Shaffer set fast time and a New Track Record with a 16.444. The top three in their A-Heat were winner #29 Kyle Matthews, Reggie Gill, and Shaffer. The top three in their B-Heat were winner Duane Lacy, Craig Rice, and Bill Hayes.

The #31 Earl Peyton would bring the field around for the start, but it was the #57 Jerry LaPlante who would lead the first four laps. On lap five, Puyallup, Washington’s Lacy, driving the DRL Siding/Delta Camshaft/Shaffer Racing Ford Mustang would take away the lead and go on to win the Mini Stock 30-Lap Main Event. Rounding out their top five were runner up Shaffer, Gill, K. Matthews, and Freeman Pruitt.

The Foreign Stock Car Racing Association Super 4’s saw the #10 John Grosvenor set fast time with a 14.430. The top three in their A-Heat were winner #09 Renny Marose, Grosvenor, and Tom Keehan. The top three in their B-Heat were winner #9 Cody Stewart, Jerry Koepping, and Jeff Jones.

The #21 Koepping would bring the field around for the green flag, but it was the #9 Stewart who would lead the first six laps. On lap seven, Puyallup, Washington’s #10 Grosvenor, driving the D.L. Henricksen Drywall Ford Taurus would take the lead away from Stewart and go on to win the Super 4’s 30-Lap Main Event. Rounding out their top five were runner up Wayne Dillon, Stewart, Jones, and Koepping.

Upcoming racing at South Sound Speedway: Saturday, July 12, 2008 features the Super Stock 150-BIG 4 Series, WESO, Mini Stocks, WMRA, and the Mini Cup Future Stars. Then on Saturday, July 19, 2008, come see the Big Rigs, Limited Late Models, NWOSS, and the Pro 4 Trucks compete.
