On Saturday, July 5, 2008, the Quality Car Care Limited Late Models saw 19 cars make an attempt to qualify at the West Coast’s fastest 3/8’s mile paved oval. There were 10 Crate Engines and 9 Compression Engines. It was Snohomish, Washington’s #1 Shane Sawin setting fast time with a 13.743 with a Compression Engine. The Trophy Dash winner was the #01 Chris Hallberg.

The 100-Lap Main Event saw the #21 Phil Willis take the early lead. On lap nine, Cosmopolis, Washington’s #11X, Tom Sweatman, driving the Masco Petroleum/Putnam-Lieb Attorneys/Parts Locators/Western Performance & Machine Chevrolet Monte Carlo, with a Crate Engine, would make a pass for the lead and go on to win his first Limited Late Model race of the season. Rounding out their top five were runner up Sawin, Chad Hinkle, JJ Hamilton, and Ron Wolf.

The Canadian Old Time Racing Association was back for day two of racing at South Sound Speedway. Victoria, BC’s #03 Dennis Morneau set fast time with a 15.798. The winner of their Trophy Dash was #17 Joe Dardengo from Victoria, BC. The top three in their A-Heat was winner #22 Larry Joyce from Parksville, BC, James Campbell, and Dennis Morneau. The top three in their B-Heat were winner #54 Larry Wannamaker, from Chilliwack, BC, Terry Cessford, Hugh Glover.

The #54 Wannamaker would bring the field around for the start and lead the first eight laps. On lap nine, Abbotsford, BC’s #43 Dean Gill, driving the Parksville Safety Center/Wiebe & Jesky Funeral Providers 1930 Ford Model A Sedan would wrestle away the lead from Wannamaker and go on to win the OTRA 35-Lap Main Event. Rounding out their top five were runner up Dan Morneau, Jim Rankin, James Campbell, and Dennis Morneau.

The Delta Camshaft Mini Stocks Trophy Dash winner was #7 Devin Matthews. The top three in their A-Heat were winner #1 Duane Lacy, Doug Shaffer, and Reggie Gill. The top three in their B-Heat were winner #2 Tabby Bracale, Doug McPeake, JR., and Jon Baglien.

The #31 Earl Peyton would lead the first five laps until the #6 Floyd Hayne would take away the lead and lead the next three laps. On lap nine, the #17 Bill Hayes would take his turn up front. On lap 10, Tacoma, Washington’s #7 Devin Matthews, driving the Totally Awesome Motorsports/RG’s Welding and Fabrication Ford Mustang would blow by Hayes for the lead. D. Matthews would go on to win his first Mini Stock Main Event of the season. Rounding out their top five were runner up McPeake, JR., Baglien, Shaffer, and Lacy.

The Hinkle Homes Pure Stocks Trophy Dash winner was Yelm, Washington’s #4 Leon Collins. Their top three in their Heat race were winner #27 Brian Wilson, Matt Duffey, and Collins.

The #23 Don Briggs, JR. would bring the field around for the green flag start and lead the first lap. The #15 Scott Johnson would take over the lead on lap two. Johnson looked like the car to beat until a flat tire sent him to the pits on lap 23. The #24 Marshall Hallett would inherit the lead on lap 24. The pass of the night had to go to Rochester, Washington’s #27 Wilson, driving the All-N-One Rentals/Zahn Hauling Chevrolet Nova, who made a pass to the outside on Hallett coming out of turn four for the checkered flag. Wilson would win the 25-Lap Pure Stock Main Event by mere inches at the finish line. Rounding out their top five were runner up Hallett, Collins, and Kenny Erickson.

Upcoming racing at South Sound Speedway: Saturday, July 12, 2008 features the Super Stock 150-BIG 4 Series, WESO, Mini Stocks, WMRA, and the Mini Cup Future Stars. Then on Saturday, July 19, 2008, come see the Big Rigs, Limited Late Models, NWOSS, and the Pro 4 Trucks compete.
