MORARITY WINS MILLER 200 AT SSS
South Sound Speedway
Rochester, WA
■John King
The Super Stocks Miller 200 on Saturday, August 9, 2008, saw 21 cars make an attempt to qualify. It was Centralia, Washington’s “The Crate Motor Kid” #11X JJ Hamilton setting fast time with a 13.557 and winning the Joe’s $100.00 Fast Time Qualifying Award with the only Crate engine in the race. Winning the Echo Chain Saw Trophy Dash was the #54 Mike Obrist.
After qualifying, a race fan rolled the Lucky Eagle Casino dice for the Miller 200 line up. Seven was the lucky number rolled for the invert.
Before the start of the race, the fans had a Meet and Greet on the race track with the Drivers. The Drivers passed their helmets around in memory of Frank Brandt, and took donations for Christian Roeder and the Brandt Law Firm Racing Team. South Sound Speedway donated $500.00, Mike Barrett Motor Sports donated $500.00 and with the race teams and fans help, a total of $1700.00 was raised. Frank Brandt, the racing community will deeply miss you.
Monroe, Washington’s #5 Tom Moriarity, driving the Brock Rentals Inc/Total Machine Concepts Chevrolet Monte Carlo, who qualified seventh, would bring the 21 car field around for the green flag start and take the early lead. The #73 Gary Lewis had settled into third place from his fifth place starting position, but before half way, Lewis would tangle with a lapped car, which ended his chances of winning his seventh race in a row this season.
After the 10 minute break at half way, the #5 Moriarity would pick up right where he left off by leading the field around again for the green flag start.
On the closing laps of the race, the #1 Rod Schultz, JR, would challenge Moriarity for the lead, but was unable to make a pass. Moriarity would go on to win the Miller 200 by leading all 200 laps. After the race, Moriarity said, “Man, what a night! I need a ride to the Lucky Eagle Casino so I can place a bet on lucky #7. I can’t believe the season we are having. We qualified 7th, and by winning the Miller 200, we now have won our 7th race in a row this season. I would like to thank my car Owner, Mike Barrett, and my Crew. Without them, this wouldn’t be possible.” Rounding out their top five were runner up Schultz, JR., Kelly Mann, Hamilton, and Brad Stanwood.
This year at the Miller 200, every Driver was given a voucher for a free prize from our supporting Sponsors. Thanks to Hyper Coil Springs, Swift Springs, Joe’s, Longacre, Turbo Blue Racing Fuel, and Echo Outdoor Power Equipment.

The top three in their A-Heat were winner Shaffer, Devin Matthews, and Jeff Bracale. The top three in their B-Heat were winner #17 Bill Hayes, Floyd Hayne, and Craig Rice.
