HINKLE WINS FIRST LIMITED LATE MODEL RACE AT SSS

South Sound Speedway
Rochester, WA

■John King

The mercury was up to 102.9 degrees Saturday, August 16, 2008 at South Sound Speedway, and the fans saw a lot of hot racing action at the West Coast’s fastest 3/8’s mile paved oval.

The Quality Car Care Limited Late Models saw 14 cars make an attempt to qualify. There were nine Crate Engines and five Compression Engines. It was Centralia, Washington’s #11 JJ Hamilton setting fast time with a 13.854. Winning the Trophy Dash was #43 Ron Wolf. The last Limited Late Model race Driver of the Week was the #91 Arlyn Long.

The #6 Devin Eierman would bring the field around for the green flag start and lead the first five laps. On lap six, Yakima, Washington’s #38 Chad Hinkle, driving the HiLine Homes/Quality Car Care, Chevrolet Monte Carlo, would wrestle away the lead from Eierman with Hamilton right on his back bumper. Around lap 27, Olympia, Washington’s #67 Dirk Stephens, would make his way up to third behind Hamilton from his 13th place starting position. On lap 30, Stephens would make a move to the inside of Hamilton, the two were side by side when Hamilton hit the front stretch wall and would retire on lap 34 with suspension problems. Stephens would pressure Hinkle for the lead, but never could make the pass. Hinkle would go on to win his first Limited Late Model 50-Lap Main Event driving a Crate Engine. Hinkle said after the race, “I finally won a race driving a fiberglass body car and what a crew I have, they have given me a top five car all year long. This win is for them.” Rounding out their top five were runner up Stephens, Wolf, Tom Sweatman, and Long.

The Hinkle Homes Pure Stocks saw Rochester, Washington’s #27 Brian Wilson set fast time with a 16.740. Winning their Trophy Dash was #22 Kenny Erickson. The top three in their A-Heat were winner #96 Matt Duffey, Leon Collins, and Scott Johnson. The top three in their B-Heat were winner #52 Jeff Boheler, Don Briggs, JR., and Jake Haider.

The #88 John Lathrop, JR. would bring the field around for the start, but it was the #54 Haider leading the first eight laps. The #70 Rick Casebolt would move past Haider on lap nine, and lead the next five laps until the #4 Collins would take over the lead on lap 15. On lap 22, Wilson, driving the All-N-One Rentals/Zahn Hauling 1976 Chevrolet Nova, would take away the lead from Collins and go on to win his second Pure Stock 30-Lap Main Event of the season. Rounding out their top five were runner up Collins, Johnson, Erickson, and Haider. In post race inspection, third place Johnson, and fourth place Erickson were both fined $75.00 and loss of 25 Drivers points for an unbranded tire.

The Top Notch Trailer Street Stocks saw Tenino, Washington’s #41 Marshall Hallett set fast time with a 15.436. Winning their Trophy Dash was #12 Bobby Micielli. The top three in their Heat race were winner Micielli, Brad Borton, and Mike Easley.

The #17 Cody Erskine would bring the field around for the green flag start and lead the first lap. On lap two, Olympia, Washington’s #75 Easley, driving a Chevrolet Camaro would take away the lead from Erskine and go on to win his first Street Stock 25-Lap Main Event of the season. After the race, Easley said, “It has been a long time since I won a main event at South Sound Speedway and this one feel real good. I would also like to thank my family because without them, this would not be possible.” Rounding out their top five were runner up Hallett, Micielli, Borton, and Erskine.

The WESCO Sprint Cars saw the #3D Doug McLees set fast time with a 13.367. Winning their Trophy Dash was the #11 Rich Leighty. The top three in their Heat race were winner Leighty, McLees, and Kelly Conner.

The #57 Amanda Walker would bring the field around for the green flag start, but it was #3D McLees jumping into the early lead and leading all 25 laps of the Sprint Car Main Event. Rounding out their top five were runner up Leighty, Mike Adkins, Walker, and Conner.
