SAWIN WINS FIRST LLM RACE AT SSS
South Sound Speedway
Rochester, WA
■John King
It was overcast, the wind was cold, but there was no rain to stop all of the racing action, Saturday, June 7, 2008 at South Sound Speedway.
This weekend Drivers and Fans Meet and Greet went real well with the fans saying they can’t wait until next week so they can meet with some more of the Drivers and Crew Members.
The Quality Car Care Limited Late Models saw 22 cars make an attempt to qualify. There were 11 Crate engines and 11 Compression engines. It was Tacoma, Washington’s Billy Weber setting fast time with a 13.878. In the first four races, it is Crates two vs. Compression two when it comes to setting fast time. The “Crate Motor Kid”, #11 JJ Hamilton holds the track record with a 13.744, set on April 12, 2008. This week’s winner of the Quality Car Care Clean Car Care Award was the #1 Shane Sawin.
The 75-Lap Main Event saw Snohomish, Washington’s #1 Shane Sawin, driving the Rockstar Energy Drink/Cope Brother’s Racing Engines Chevrolet Monte Carlo bring the field down to the green flag start. The yellow was out before the first lap was completed with three cars spinning in the middle of turns one and two making it a complete restart. Sawin would bring them around again and the race was on. Weber would work his way up to second, behind Sawin from his eighth place starting position with Hamilton in tow. Just past half way, Weber and Hamilton would tangle and spin bringing out the caution. Both cars were put to the back. Sawin still held the lead on the restart with the #38 Chad Hinkle all over his back bumper. Late in the race, the action was so exciting when Hinkle made a move to the outside. The two tangled coming out of turn four. It looked like they were both going to wreck, that the Flagman got so excited, he threw the yellow flag, but there was no wreck. The race was restarted with seven laps to go. Hinkle tried hard to take away the lead from Sawin, but had to settle for second. Sawin would go on to win his first Limited Late Model Main Event at the West Coast’s fastest 3/8’s mile paved oval. Rounding out their top five were runner up Hinkle, Ron Wolf, Jon Hubbert, and Steven Roberts.
The Delta Camshaft Mini Stocks saw no Qualifying this week with the line up set by points for the Heat races and Main Event. The top three in their A-Heat were winner #29 Kyle Matthews, Doug Shaffer, and Freeman Pruitt. The top three in their B-Heat were winner #1 Duane Lacy, Doug McPeake, JR., and Bill Hayes.
The #57 Jerry LaPlante wound bring the 13 car field around for the start, but it was McPeake, JR. jumping into the early lead and led the first four laps until Puyallup, Washington’s #1 Lacy, driving a Ford Mustang, took the lead away. Lacy would go on to win the 25-Lap Main Event, his first Mini Stock win of the season. Rounding out their top five were runner up Reggie Gill, K. Matthews, Shaffer, and Jon Baglien.
The Hinkle Homes Pure Stocks saw no Qualifying this week with the line up set by points, for their Heat Race and Main Event. The top three in their Heat race were winner #75 John Nelson, Matt Duffey, and Brian Wilson.
The #75 Nelson would bring the field around for the green flag start and lead the first four laps. On lap five, current points leader, and last year’s Pure Stock Champion, Longview, Washington’s #15 Scott Johnson, driving the D & S Light Truck & Auto Chevrolet Camaro would take over the lead and go on to win his third Main Event of the season. Rounding out their top five were runner up Wilson, Don Briggs, JR., Kenny Erickson, and Duffey.
The Northwest Baby Grands top three in their Heat race were Graham, Washington’s #16 Nik Larson, Brook Lefor, and Brandon Barlow.
Brinnon, Washington’s #23 Michael Millard-Perales would bring the eight car field around for the start and lead the first two laps. On lap three, Larson would take his turn at the front and lead the next two laps until the #22 Cody Stewart made the pass for the lead on lap five. Stewart looked like the kid to beat until Gig Harbor, Washington’s #24 AJ Butler, driving the Xtreme Graphics/Steve Blankenship Trucking Chevrolet Monte Carlo wrestled away the lead on the last lap and would go on to win his first 20-Lap Main Event of the season. This was Butler’s first race in a Baby Grand. Rounding out their top five were runner up Stewart, Millard-Perales, Lash Larew, and Kayla Roberts.
The AMRS Mini Cup Future Stars finishing order in their Heat race were winner #3 Seth Cooper, Dustin Torrey, Tyler Knittle, and Blake Wood.
Washougal, Washington’s #16 Dustin Torrey would bring the field around for the start and lead the five laps. On lap six, Tacoma, Washington’s #3 Seth Cooper, driving the S.E.P. Small Engine Performance/Amsoil/Briggs & Stratton Chevrolet Monte Carlo would take over the lead and go on to win his fourth 10-Lap Mini Cup Future Stars Main Event of the season.
