Here are a couple basic things to consider:
#1. & most important.. every image online is owned by someone...be sure you have permission to use that image should it not be your own.
#2. If the image is large you will either need to have or at least have access to some kind of photo editor program so that you can resize the image.
From there it is relatively easy to save to your hard drive and then under your account click on avatar, browse your hard drive/pics and upload the correct image.
Please make sure that the dimensions of the image do not exceed 200x200 pixels, and the file size is not bigger than 48K. Otherwise an error message will be displayed.

And if the image exceeds 200 pixels ? You have to resize it.
I use Corel Draw 8 to resize & resample my pics for avatars. The pics I take at the track are wayyyyyyyyyyyyy too large for avatars............................
Anyone having a problem resizing, I think You can use Paint in your windows program.
After that .......... if You want email me your pic & i can re-size it & email back to you.

I think Greg told you everything.
The only addition would be that once you have permission to use a picture from the net, you need to right click the image. From the menu, chose "Save Picture As". Put the picture in "my pictures".
Once in "my pictures" you can right click the image again and select "open with". MS paint works fine. Look for the properties which will tell you file size and number of pixels. Use "size/skew" to adjust the picture to the proper size and save.
In your personal settings, click the browse button, go to "my pictures" and click on your saved file. Click save (or update) your personal file on the message board and you should be all set.

| I thought the rule with the net and pictures is that you can use them IF you give credit to the photographer. I thought there was no true copywright protecting the internet as long as you don't print and distribute...

| Hey bankbill27 I talked to a lawyer friend of mine about this very subject about a year ago or so. She said that unless you are using the picture to make money or it specially says "Do Not Use My Photo Without Permission", or something to that affect, there is no copyright violation. Mind you, this attorney specializes in business/corporate law, so it is possible she's wrong, but unlikely she is very smart.
