Just brought home an old Open wheel modified from Uncle Rally's house.  Many of you might remember it from the Northwest area.  It's the Rally Root # 01, 1938 Bantam.  I'm going to restore it and want to find somewhere to run it.  Any Ideas??

Me thinks that the car would fit in the Golden Wheels rules. PM me and I can get you contact info if you want it.

These cars Used to run all over the Northwest.  Yes at Monroe, Friday nights WWRA, Then we'd go to Skagit on Saturday night.  Greys Harbor, Ephrata , Port Angeles, Wenatchee, Stateline, St. Helens, Dirt or Asphault it didnt matter, Change the tires and ride height and go racing.  I drove a similar car in the early 90's and at one time Rally had built or helped just about everyone that had these cars.  They are still out there!

I don't remember ever seeing you there. Then again, you must have been pretty young then. Austin's dad was barely out of the 'learning to walk' stage at that time.

Sure was fun times though.

Hey Curt I know you would help out a good friend RIGHT??  We still know where alot of these cars are still sitting, Heck the car I used to have is out here somewhere too.  I really was hoping that the new promoter at Evergreen might take an interest in a low dollar class a few steps up from the Hornets.  It would be cool to see these cars on a track somewhere.  If not Golden Wheels is always an option!

My Car in the 90's at Skagit Speedway.  Early Modified Class.

Started going  in 67 or 68, I was 6 or 7 yrs. old. My parents were friends with Marshall Vangemert (sp?) & Han DeBaker. Han started wrenching for Marshall in the Knowells Const. #28 & then Han started driving the Metro Paving #48.

Last Sat. I was talking to Jay Barnes @ GHR about the "old days" @ Sky Valley, Skagit, Monroe & the IDC.

Vintage Mods race at Stateline, there is also a group that hangs at South Sound and Banks I believe. Also, OTRA still runs on Vancouver, Island. I believe Uncle Rally's car would be close to legal at any of those venues or with any of those groups. Also I liked the idea of running with the Vintage Racers, those guys rock and we get to see them again on August 30th at Ephrata Raceway Park...

My dad Harold Nicholas used to partner with Rally's dad Laver Root during the late 50's and early 60's at old Sky Valley.  Laver was a key person in the early days of Sky Valley as he was also the long time early announcer.  When I wrote for Racing Wheels in the early 80's covering Sky Valley on the asphalt at Evergreen, I have an old video of Rally letting me time in the 01 in this picture.  As Rally was way 6 foot plus and I'm a short 5 ft 6, I had a hard time getting buckled into the car and thought I was setting a track record (in reality for the slowest car on the track).  David Casey drove the other Bantam Coupe.  Great to see Rally back racing again!!  Kelly

There's one of these cars sitting on a trailer at Crooked River Ranch, Oregon.......it appears to be in mint condition.  No dings or dents.  Been sitting on this trailer for the last 11 years that I know of.

We did stop by some time back and visited with the older gentleman who owns it..............he asked if we wanted to buy it so I know it's for sale.  The owners last name is Winchester and if memory serves me correctly, it's got a VW motor.

Tom,

What happened to the red Bantam Coupe that David Casey drove?  Hard to believe that the modifieds that you guys drove at Skagit are the grandaddy's of Skagits Sportsman and brother class to the WESCO (which this group also sprung from the Sky Valley and Washington Open Wheel clubs).  There never seemed to be more than 6 to 10 cars but always a good show!

For the record, I miss WOW.

Without fail that was one of my favorite shows at Wenatchee Valley Raceway when they would come to town. Great racing, great cars, great people, always a highlight of my year.

Talking to Rally, he seems to know where a few of the cars are still sitting in back yards or fields.  Im not sure abut Dave's car, but the car we called the Heinz 57 Model T pickup bodied car is sitting alone and probably cheap.  My old car is out there somewhere.  We sold it to Tim Dehart and went to look at getting it about a year ago but it was gone.  I would really like to get a hold of that one too.   Tom

Tommy my friend......don't drop the ball on this. I seriously believe this would work.....just gotta stand behind it and keep poking it in the butt. It'll go.....but it has to have somebody with some energy to lead it. I understand your other focus.....if you don't have the time find somebody that does. And NO.........lol.

I volunteer Curt, Tom Glithero, and John Ball. Three retired racing guys with free weekends for the first time in their lives to spearhead a committee. Mandatory free shots or schooners for the Board of Directors. If Mr. Root will head up the thing, I will even join the newly formed group and do some PR stuff.

Remember on August 30th that the Vintage group and Golden Wheels will be at Ephrata for a wingless show with our local sprints and WESCO, as well as WMRA. If Ephrata runs a similar show in the upcoming years, I could see this new group tagging along as a perfect fit.

THINK BIG.

Right now its still in early development stages.  I need a few rule books to get some ideas of where to start.  Those classes above are what I raced in, and in my mind a good starting point for right now.   Tom

Any help would be appreciated.  I want to used the older rule books as a guide to help design something that would be interesting for fans, and as affordable and fun for participants.  Updated safety of course.  Tom

Had a chance to visit with Gaylen Stewart last night, along with a slew of others, at the North Sound Racing 100 year anniversary show. Just an fyi Tom.....Gaylen has an old Ross Fontes car built in 1968 and he's just looking for a reason to put it back together and go play. The interest is there. I also talked to Bert Johnson......I think PA would be very interested as a track if this thing takes off.

Just an opinion.........K.I.S.S.
