Maybe some of you veteran drivers like Dick & Jerry can explain the theory dirt tracks were packed backwards in the late 60's & 70's. I have yet to find anyone with an explanation who came up with the idea?

As I recall ( thats hard do do these days) It was a idea Jim Raper had to make the track better. It was a thrill a minute with backwards stagger on a wet track Jerry

You are right on Jerry on all three counts. Jim felt that if you laid the clay down packing backwards it wouldn't tear up as bad when you hot-lapped.
Jim used to till the surface with a deep cut and then pack it in and then take a sacrificial 2" till cut and repack. During hot laps the 2" would blow off leaving a smooth surface for racing and build a smaller cusion. Didn't always work but that was his story and if you knew Jim he stuck to it.
It was something that he learned when he was invited to prep the track either at Knoxville or Eldora, can't remember which now. That by the way was one of Jim's greatest honors to be invited to do that.

| I don,t recall ever tilling at the Elma 1/2, unless it was when new clay was brought in. We would use a drag rake and then a rock picking party! Track would pack in relativily fast and racers would tend to turn packing into hot laps before E.A.R.A. officers could get the racers to do another round of rock picking. Lots of rocks!! As I recall, AL

Boy can you picture Jim and Art in their straw hats, hand watering Eldora or Knoxville?
