WOW Curt.. those early pics from Sky Valley really bring back my childhood memories of growing up at West Capitol. I used to have the privedge of cleaning my dads car after a night of racing and thought it was one of the coolest things to do. We used to call cars like that Hardtops there. Another big deal for kids at WC was we could ride in the back of pickups during packing. Very Cool for a 9 yr old!

Thanks for pics and keep it up. You are doing great and I thankyou for it!

Rickt

In '67 when we went to Sacramento Rick, we stayed at the El Rancho.....which I believe was right down the street from West Capitol. My first time at that track they carried some lady out of the grandstands because she got whacked in the head from a big dirt clod and it knocked her out. I learned early don't sit low in turn 4. This was back in the day that most of those guys raced both dirt and pavement and were equally good at both. I wouldn't trade growing up around this racing stuff for anything. Myself, Mickey Beadle and Jay Barnes used to hock programs and Racing Wheels in the grandstands at Sky Valley for Betty Gardner, Kenny Gardners wife. She had a photo booth just as you came into the grandstands area from the spectator parking lot. Geez....that was just yesterday.........lol.

Sky Valley originally started out on a little track down by the Lewis Street bridge by the river in Monroe, I believe in the late 50's. They then moved across town on some land that the county leased them for $1 a year, I think that was 1960. I would have to check with Gene (Guptill....he's the guy in the b/w photo #11 car with a trophy in his hand), he would remember the exact years on this. I believe in about '78 or so they moved to Evergreen on the pavement.

Here's one more from early Sky Valley days....then I'll post some early Dirt Cup at Elma photos that I already have scanned. These are some that ended up the other board and the long thread a few years back. Rick Leighty helped name most of them....I had forgotten who or what I took pics of.....lol. Anyway.....

Curt, is that Don Perry with the beer walking out of the picture?  First started going to the champ car races at the Fairgrounds in '65. The midget races at Altamont and Stockton and the supers at West Capital and Roseville made for a great weekend with my dad.

No it isn't.....although I spent alot of time around Don & Ginny growing up, they weren't with us on that trip. I think if I remember correctly it was one of Foyt's crew guys. Does kinda look like a younger Don tho doesn't it.
