John Carroll?
Must have been in the early 90's he made the Dirt Cup main. I noticed that John was the only driver in the main with a manual steering gear. When questioned about it he gave a smile and said a relaxed driver doesn't need power steering- and he stuck out both arms to simulate holding the steering wheel with a very light grip (with monstor sized paws). The guy was gold and one of the last to do it all. RIP John!
I have this one next to my shop awaiting restoration. More pictures are needed.

Later,
SprintCarz

Here's a clipping Just an Old Guy sent me not too long ago. Shows an aerial view of the Silver Lake area with the oval. Half mile horse track. According to Allan Brown's History of America's Speedways it ran from c.1927 to c. 1934. And then again in 1951. I've got race results from 1935 so information keeps trickling in on the track.

And here's a photo of a big car (what we'd now call a sprint car) reportedly at Silver Lake Speedway in the 1930s. Mario Bianchi raced right back into the 1920s all over the Pacific Northwest. He and his brother Pete were pioneers of auto racing in this area. Again, thanks to Just an Old Guy for sending these photos from way back when.

And one more taken right around the same time, 1951. The houses in the background would have been along what is now 112th St. to the north of the track.

Here's on from another track no longer in existance, Jantzen Beach in Portland, OR. No date. Probably 1950's. It's Bill Mechner in the #66 midget, former Gordie Lundquist car. Note he's pumping up pressure in the fuel tank. And no, it didn't last all the way through the race. Something else the driver had to remember to do.

| Temple Toyota......if memory serves me that was Ed Williams's dealership that he inherited from his dad many moons ago. I know that Ed sponsored some cars back in the day before he sold the place.

Anthony Simone...saw him with the USAC Supermodifieds when they came up to Evergreen Speedway in '85 or '86. Also saw him @ the Copper World Classic a few times. Didn't he get in trouble with the law a few years later?

Up here in Washington, not to good. Rollie Lielke drove a Don Edwards built roadster with Sky Valley and Skagit for a few years and did really good. I do not know of any others that did any good on dirt.
Now on to the movies

LOL, Chuck#16...the only thing you could do to make that photo more recognizable is widen it a little to show the blackberry bushes that acted as the crash wall on the backstretch. It probably wasn't so bad in a stock car, but going off the backstretch in a sprint or super modified must have really hurt!
Sadly, it looks as if nothing is left of the track, I'm down in PDX for my daughter's heart surgery, and went out searching for the track yesterday. Ironically, as you are going northbound on I-5, there is still a freeway sign directing you to the exit to Portland Speedway.
Also went out to Banks last evening just because. My other daughter, who rode along asked me, "Uhhh, why are we here?" I told her, "it's like visiting Mecca."
"What's Mecca,"she asked?
What's Mecca???? It's the place sprint car fans hang out at in the summertime!

The pic of Anthony Simone from Evergreen brings back some good memories. That car was one the original style supers that Ed Hyder started building that led to his radical 24" offsets. The year that Anthony drove that car at Evergreen was a 2 day "National" event. One day on the 3/8's the other on the 5/8's. At the end of the weekend Anthony was racing his Suburban around the 5/8's after a few beers and Bob Beadle heard the noise and came out onto the track to put a stop to that nonsense....lol.....and was greeted with a full cup of beer to the face from Mr Simone.
And yes....Mr Simone later spent some time "away"....lol.

| How could a person forget Portland Speedway and the infamous 3rd turn blackberrys....lol. I remember one year Joe Delong taking a trip out there.....the wrecker hooked up to his rear nerf and pulled him out. Joe couldn't get out of the car because blackberry bushes were wrapped around the entire car. They towed him back to the pits and had to cut away the bushes before he could get out. I wish I would have taken a picture that day......probably wasn't too funny to Joe but I couldn't stop laughing. Last edited on Monday Dec 10th, 2007 06:16 PM by CurtK

Dennis "Buckwheat" Hall. We still BS on the phone. I think I remember that night... His dad (Don) asked me to "break in" his freshly rebuilt 100cc Yamaha because buckwheat had to work late that night. That engine had a ton of power. I asked Don if it was a big bore (122cc) & he just grinned. Well Dennis was DQ'd after the main! The big Honda piston fell right into the barrel.
I believe that is Arnie Starks on the outside of Kitts. Byron Colemans car was an ex Billy Kinnelly car.
