| This is a photo of Rick Singler from Volusia County speedway in Florida in 2001. He moved sometime in the 90's I believe. He was very tough at Medford in the late 70's and early 80's. I will dig up some photos of his cars at Medford and put them on this thread. Attachment: rick singler 2001.jpg (Downloaded 365 times)

| One more for now, here's Rotten Ron Martin from the pre-season car show in the Sears parking lot in 1980 or 81. Ron ran very well in this car that year. I want to say he won the Late Model points title in this car, but I'm not quite sure. Attachment: ron martin 1981.jpg (Downloaded 360 times)

Is that the same Ron Martin that owns Ron Martin racing out of Medford? Owns the O Jon DeBenedetti's car, and the 0P Brian Poppa's car?

sprintcarfan2007,
As Jason replied, that's the same Ron Martin. He was very good in a Dirt Late Model and won his share while he was racing. His cars and the hauler were bright orange and absolutely beautiful. He had an asphalt Camaro that was built by Turn Key Race cars in SoCal that was one of the most stunning race cars I've ever seen. I would love to find some more photos of his cars.
My fondest memory of Ron was at the 1980 or 81 Oregon Carpet Exchange Cabin-Craft 100 race at Medford that paid $15000 to win. He ran second to Colorado star Odie Robertson for most of the race and then got passed by another Colorado star in Ken Tadolini and finished 3rd. That was a lot of fun to watch and was the biggest race Medford ever had.
How about a photo of the legendary Harold Hardesty to make you guys smile? He was very strong all over the west coast. This car won several times with Harold behind the wheel.

Don Hood in one of his well known A1 Camaro's from 1977.
There were 8 or 9 Don Hood built cars running around Oregon in this time period.

Great shots Jason! I have a couple of those saved myself.
I love the shot of Ben with flagman Fred Higginbotham. I knew Freddy pretty well and he was a good guy to me. He was tough at the racetrack though. He ruled the roost.
I don't have any photos of Ben's cars scanned, but I think I have a few in my Medford collection somewhere.
I haven't seen a picture of Harold's purple Mustang for years. Another friend of mine, Todd Rosborough bought that car from Harold although I don't think he ever raced it.
The Don Harper/Rick Singler photo is awesome! I love it.
And finally, that indeed is Jay McCleary racing with Dane Smith in 1982.
Here's a shot of California's Mark Welch racing with the Mopar Kit Car of Bob Whiteside....

The pictures on this thread bring back many good memories.
The picture of Ben Neel and flagman Fred Higginbotham reminded me of the days when Fred lived in Eugene and flagged at many races in this area. A great flagman and a great guy to share a few beers and stories with after the races.
Don Hood's A-1 car was nearly unbeatable at Eugene, Willamette and Riverside Speedway in Cottage Grove.
The late Dave White and I were headed to Anderson for one of the fall races and stopped at Don's house in Grants Pass. We helped Don load up for the trip. His equipment for this trip consisted of one small half-ton pickup, 1 small open trailer for the A-1 car. One jack and 4-way lug wrench, one spare tire and one very small toolbox. When we stopped in our pit spot, Don, Dave and I stood in the back of the pickup and watched hot laps. The Pit Boss comes by and tells us that we had better get unloaded and ready for time trials. After about half of the cars had timed in, the pit boss comes by again and tells us to either unload or leave.
We pushed the car off the trailer, put the one spare on the right front and lined up to time in as the final qualifier finished his lap. Hood pulls the A-1 car on the track at the backstretch entry road and motors in to turn three and four. apparently, the flagger was not too happy and he threw the green instead of giving Don a warm-up lap. This made Don a bit unhappy. His first lap was pretty slow but the second lap was fast time and a track record!
Anyone remember when Eureka was clay and they scheduled the Tuesday and Wednesday night races during the Humboltd County Fair? This show always drew all the top cars from Oregon and Northern California.

Funny how the cars at the Grove and Lebanon looked like the cars that ran at Medford. I was down from the Grove in the 80's. And watch some of them same cars run at Medford.
Funny that people didn't know that Bill Nutter and Dan Menne started is stock cars then the SUPER STOCKS of the day.
I had watched both run at the Grove in the Old Loggers cup. And watched Kim Scales go off of turn 1 into the frog pond and stand on the roll cage till they got him out of the water. Water was all the way up to the top of the cage.

Many of the top drivers did race at Cottage Grove, Lebanon and Medford back in the day. When I lived at the track in Lebanon and we ran some of the "All-Star" races on Sundays, many of the cars from Medford would load up after the Medford races and head for Lebanon. I shared my Sunday morning coffee with them in the camping area at Lebanon while we talked about the prevoius nights racing at the three tracks. Those were fun times and the racing was great!

Hey, anyone got some photos from that time at the Grove, Lebanon, Eugene, Roseburg or Coos Bay? I would love to see some good shots of Joe Bond, Jay Bugbee, Robert Hand, the Silbernagel's, Mark Howard, Bob Saily, Brian Holmeide, RicK Hunsley, Jack Keck etc...
Let's keep this thread going as long as we can.
I remember that some of the Grove and Willamette drivers running down in Medford, but it didn't happen that often. Mostly, they would come down for the Sunday afternoon season openers and the big shows. It was probably due to running on the same night most of the time.
I did go up and see races at all of those tracks during those years and loved watching the Medford drivers run with the stars from those tracks.
I believe Dane did win a race in 84 or so at Willamette, but I didn't get to see it. Anyone have detail on that?
Here's another Medford photo of three long time drivers at Medford. Any guesses on their names?
The #18 Chevelle is Harlan Koens (now living in Roseburg with son Wade racing late models there), the #1 '57 Chevy convertible is Jack Robinson (getting turned around) by the #60 Mustang of Glen Ward.

1983: Roger Haudenshield is in the LXIX car. You can see flagman Freddy Higgenbotham standing in the backround, along with the cool Cadillac ambulance and water truck they used to have.
