Jason,
I'm really interested in seeing your latest photos, I sold my street stock Caprice to Don Brilowski in 1980. The number 186 was mine for a season (guess where that came from?) and he kept it. The Apache Jammer... Wow!!!! I haven't heard that name for years!!!!! .
I ran my brothers old Impala in 1981 with the number 121 on it.

Scott,
I don't know if you've had a chance to go to any races at Southern Oregon Speedway now that you live out of the area. The Apache Jammer is at pretty much every race in the stands. He sits over in turn four near the handicapped section- he had a stroke some years back, but he seems to get around quite well. He used to live next door to my grandparents in White City in his "wilder" days.
Jason
P.S. I always wondered where he got #186 from. I would have guessed it came from being 86ed out of a bunch of bars!

Jason,
That's cool, I will have to try to find him the next time I go there. Thanks for the info. As I remember, that dude was a wild one!!! A really fun guy to be around. I wonder if he will remember me?
I've been to SOS a couple of times when I get back home to visit my Mom.
Here's another Medford shot for ya. This is 'Possum' P M Durnford in 1977 when he first showed up at the track. I believe both Roger Haudenshield and Tom Wyatt later drove this Camaro for Durnford and had some success.

| How about this guy? Anyone remember the Ford Falcon of Yreka driver Vern Gilmore? This is Vern in the car in 1978. A few seasons later, he hooked up with Dane Smith who then drove this car with several wins to his credit. It was the beginning of a very successful partnership as they stayed together through the mid eighties winning a lot of races on the West coast. Harold Hardesty is doing will and still living in Ashland Or. I met with him a couple of weeks ago. He has a property near I-5 where he is making a musuem for old cars and race cars. He holds an old car show there he is restoring and old gas station that he got somewhere in Ashland. He had a fire in one of his shops and lost all his old clippings and trophies of the racing it would sure be great if anyone had any thing that he could put in the museum of his racing days. He has some that we have been able to collect for him.
I can tell you some stories of the eventures of my experiance with him as I met him when he was driving in the first IDC. I was a kid living in Canada. I guess you could say a track rat the kind that would help all the drivers unload thier haulers and cars help change tires and even get them a pop when they came off the track. Harold saw something in me and asked me and my parents if we would like to come along to the different tracks in the IDC races. We did and I have never looked back. I still run his name on all my race cars and run his # 52 on my race car. He offered summer work at the old Medford Speedway and even let me drive a race car for the first time. I travelled every where he went and to me he is my biggest hero and my closes friends some 38 years later. We won many races together Cottage Grove, Lebonnon, Skagit, and even an IDC championship. That man can drive pavement and even better on Dirt. Thank-you Harold.
I still live in Canada and I race Midgets. I will bring a couple of cars to race at Salem on the 19 0f January 2008. I would love to talk racing with anyone. Hey and Harold even asked if he could race one of the cars there. There is no quit in that guy. thanks and drop me a line at merrittspeedway@shaw.ca Keith" Hollywood" Davidson
Oh by the way the #75 car that Harold drove in the 70's was owned and normally driven by Bert Beck or Gold Hill. Bert had a broken arm then.

Hollywood,
Great stuff! Thanks for the post. How cool is Harold? I read about him restoring the gas station in Ashland. What a fun thing to be able to work on. I would really like to see it when it's done.
By the way, nice shot of you at speed in your midget! That looks like more fun than the law should allow....
I got to visit Bert Beck's shop once in the late 70's. One of my best friends growing up was Jack Robinson's son Scott, and we went to the shop with Jack to pick something up. That shop was like a racing museum as I remember, but, the coolest thing in there was a 1966 or so Corvair bodied late model that he'd been building for quite a while. That car finally did make it out to Medford Raceway in the early 80's with Glen Goodson or Jay McCleary driving it (I think). It was a little outdated by then, but it sure looked wicked!

Here's a shot of the car the won the biggest race that Medford ever had with Colorado's Odie Roberston at the wheel.

jason440,
I don't know if you're still out there, but you asked for a photo of your favorite driver from the Medford Raceway, the late Ben Neel. I found one of his super stock Camaro from 1977.

Scott,
Very cool, thanks for posting this! I remember as a kid sleeping through the outlaw cars and wanting to be awake to watch the street stocks for some reason. I remember always wanting Ben Neel to win. I also remember him being a big sandbagger in the demolition derbies, pretending like his car wouldn't start for awhile and then coming on strong.

Here are a couple of other Medford photos. These are of Don Gould, who passed away in the early 1970s. My dad was on his pit crew- these photos are from the mid to late 1960s.

I also have dozens of newspaper articles relating to the Medford Raceway that my grandma cut out in the mid to late 1960s.
Here are a couple of them.

Jason,
Great stuff! I've never seen some of those cars from the late 60's. Everyone had a 55 to 57 Chevy or Ford at that time.
Here's a shot of Jerry Mattey from the C class (hobby stock) in 1977. He pretty much dominated that division for several seasons...

The 1977 points champ at Medford, Bruce Rayburn at the car show in April. One of the most stunning race cars I've ever seen.
On the left is the Petty look alike Camaro of Ross Payant and on the right, the Pink Panther Chevelle of Clarence Vershoor.

Scott,
A lot of your pictures are from before my time, but they're awesome. Payant still races a modified in Roseburg once in awhile. Ken Scales does from time to time as well, but he seems to get into a lot of on-the track "altercations." Fun to watch him, though...

Jason, I'm glad you like them. I love seeing old shots of the short tracks no matter where the are from. I will try to find some more from the 80's and get them uploaded.
I've seen Ross Payant's name in result pages from the west coast. It's great that he's still racing and I've seen Ken Scales race his modifed at Shasta in the last couple years. They both were a big part of Medford Raceway.
Here's Dane Smith driving the Vern Gilmore owned big block Falcon in 1980. This car had that great big block rumble to it thanks to a 427 Ford!

This is Medford's Dick Kyker.

glane87,
Not a bad guess, from the color combination, Steve Neves' cars did look like this.
The 83 is Medford's Dan Caris and the 3 is Medford's Dick Kyker.
