The IDC had its unofficial start in 1969 at Skagit with Gordy Stewart winning and Jim Peter winning at Sky Valley.  1970 was the official start of the IDC. Tracks that hosted races include; Sky Valley, Skagit, Spanaway, Western, Grandview Bowl, Langley, Evergreen Tenino and Portland.  Skagit was rained out in '75 and ran an open comp race in September.

One of the best races was Skagit in 74 when Gary Paterson and some local driver race nose to tail and side by side for 50 laps.  Mr encylopedia wants to know who the local was?

Actually Bill's flip at Evergreen started at the entrance to turn one. They had thrown the flag to end hot laps and everyone slowed down except Bill. He went over the wheel of a slowing car right at the entrance to turn one. He was upside down as he went thru the board fence.

The flip at Evergreen wasn't nearly as bad as the one he took at Roseville that October in a NARC race. He flipped down the backstrecth and out the pit exit and across the pit.  The car held up remarkably well in both events.  At Monroe the wing wasn't even scratched.

Palmer Crowell took a really nasty flip early in the year.  The cage was badly bent and broken.

Sorry, not in the IDC.  The driver in question won at evergreen earlier in year.  Drove a yellow sprinter.

Correct if you are thinking about the formet terror of Bellflower Road.  Who was the driver that took over this car when Dick went back to strictly racing on dirt?

Correct.

Of the drivers in the IDC, whom do you think had the greatest impact on racing in the northwest.  Crousure, Patterson, Smith, Fontes, Snva or???

I was just a kid back then, and the only IDC races I ever went to were at Spanaway.  So the fact that I never saw them on dirt might make my opinion different from someone who has.  I do know they were "the" race to see back then, whether it was the stock cars or open wheels.  What I remember is that it seemed like Earl Kelley set fast time every year, but I don't remember him ever winning a race.  With all the guys from out of state, it still seemed Roy Smith was the guy to beat.  When he was running that Daffodil Special, I got tired of watching him win.  Then he went and had success with the Winston West Series after that.

I loved the races back then, you could go and see a wide variety of cars.  The roadsters, rear engine cars, sprint cars and a whole bunch of different styles of supermodifieds.  It was interesting to see what some of those guys could dream up to try and beat the next guy.  Guys like Ed Sneva, come to the track with some crazy creation.  Remember that rear engine offset they had, isn't that the car Blaine wrecked at Monroe on the 5/8s when his throttle stuck going down the front straightaway during qualifying?  That was an ugly wreck!  There was even a wide variety with the stock cars.  Now all the cars look the same, it's not as much fun.  I guess it evens the playing field, whether that's good or bad depends on who you ask.

Hey Bob46, those were the good old days:) I was at Spanaway back then myself, heres a couple of pictures that should bring back some good memories. These were taken in Aug. 75' I know who the first two are but I can't remember who the 63 was, do you?

I sure do!  That would be Ken Hamilton in the #63, here's a picture I took that day.  He was one of my favorites as a kid.  I had forgotten about him crashing that day until I saw your photo.  I then remembered him hitting the front stretch wall, bouncing off and going in to the infield, getting out and rubbing his knee.  I'm not sure why I remember that.

Years later (mid to late '90s), I saw him at Tenino racing a supermodified.  I had done a drawing of the old #63 and just happened to have it with me that day.  I asked him to sign it, which he did, but it brought back memories for him.  He said that car handled like a toilet, it wasn't one of his favorites.  We had a nice conversation, he seemed like a pretty cool guy.

Totally cool pics, you guys!  Flaggerinthree...that definately looks like a very young Davey Hamilton sitting on the side nerf of Kenny's car in your bottom picture.

Bob46, great picture, but what really brought back memories of Spanaway was seeing Doc Schaffaer's old ambulance sitting in the infield.

Man, those were some pretty great days in racing history.  Nice to have you guys posting pictures so I can relive them.  Thanks!

Tell us all about it!  Selling the car three times, and do you know what kind of condition the car is in?  Is it restorable?  I've often thought about trying to get a vintage supermodified.  Probably never will, but you never know.

Not much left of the car...frame was converted over to a 12" offset years ago...the the torsion tubes got hacked off by another owner wanting to make it a coil car...frame..and a few body panels are all that is left....car was sold to some people in weston,  ore around 1990...bought it back and sold it to some people in wallawalla...sat for 2 years and got it back...sold to a racer in othello area in 94...they sold it to a fellow in spokane...frame is in sad shape now...that is the way of most old cars I am afraid. The car never did handle...but looked darn cool! I knew of a new..never raced wedge in boise area years ago....don't know if it is still around or not....but would be neat to build one up again using new parts.....

Can't see the #2 & #11 on the cars Kurt? Old age got your eye sight or am I looking at wrong photo (just above #14 & #23)?

Was Rich Leighty running #11 then? The #2 doesn't ring any bells, but I was mostly playing in the dirt.

2 & 11

Bill Deschamps and possibly Rick Henderson. I believe the #2 and #11 were team cars owned by Nelson Kinney out of California, up for one of many trips to the IDC.  Very simple appearing cars, but always fast.

Curt, I'm disappointed in you. The #14 is one of your favorites. Look closely at the GP on the cowling. That is Gary Patterson. Here is a shot from the front showing his trademark peace sign.

Oh geez.....now that's embarrassing. I didn't even look at the cowling. I lost track of the thread.....knew it was Spanaway.....and focused on WRA. We used to totally invert the field from qualifying and invariably Marty started on the pole. And yep....GP was absolutely one of my favorites.

I guees I should start wearing my glasses behind the computer huh???

What I remember (I don't know if it's right) is that the 2 & 11 were brothers, Rick & Ron Horton(could have been Henderson?), and they were out of California.  In those days all I knew was what I heard over the loudspeaker, sitting in the grandstands.  I also remember the announcer kept talking about the #2's engine, I think it was about being a big block.  The header doesn't look like a small block Chevy header, and neither does the one on the # 63 wedge from the earlier picture.  I'm not sure what engines they were running.

I think this is a picture from the same day of Bill Deschamps in the #44.  The orange car in the background is Fred Ede's #4, I wish I had a decent picture of it.

If I remember right, the #23 is Gordy Stewart driving for Bob McLees at that time.  That's the same car Ernie Koch later bought and Everett Koch flipped it in a trophy dash off turn 1 at a WRA show.  I believe it was Dave Craver he bumped wheels with, flipped twice and landed on his wheels and drove into the pits.  Anybody remember that?

Good call on the #23, Bob46!  I thought it was Bob McLees...but looking closer into the cockpit, that IS the gold firesuit that Gordy Stewart wore.  Nice job!

The 23 is definitely  the "My Mistress car". I only new it from the Ernie Koch era with Gordy driving it.  Gordy could sure make that old cigar fly.

All those white pants brings back lost memories.
