HP Dude!  Where did you ever come up with that picture of the #11 Nova? Unbelievable!  That car was prepped by myself and a bunch of others for my Dad to race in California. I hauled it down to Eugene that weekend to shake it down for its wars in California. We had Don Ackerman in the seat that weekend and he did a great job with it for the first time. We were very happy with it as was my dad. He took it on to Sacramento where he lives. That car was driven at All American Speedway (Roseville) by Rick Poppert and has many feature wins........

Rick,

Wow! It's a small world isn't it? How cool is that? Rick Poppert drove this car huh? I saw him race several times at Shasta and a couple of times at Roseville and he was always very strong. Is that your dad?

I was 14 in 1977 and convinced my Dad to drive up to Eugene for the weekend to watch this race. I took these pictures during practice on Friday afternoon as it was a two day show. The funny thing is I took pictures of everyone it seems but George Bragg who won the show. Dumb huh?

You might be able to help me with a couple others from that event.

Rickt,

This one you might like too! I didn't take this, it was emailed to me by a friend. This is the B main I believe from the 1978 Rose Classic.

Let's see, the red mustang up front is Don Herring from Albany, Or, the gold Nova behind him is Yreka, Ca's Roger Lorenzini Sr, not sure about the next two red cars, the gold/brown Nova number 11 is Rick Poppert, the dark brown Camaro number 88 in Yreka's Bob Minton, the red 26 Nova is Cupertino drive Willie Jenrick (I think), not sure about the next five cars, the pink Ventura is Ron Strmiska from Manteca, Ca, the red 17 Nova is Bill Murchison from North Highlands, Ca, not sure who's driving the red and white Monte Carlo, (maybe Darryl Krentz?) the white number 6 Chevelle is Jerry Dow of Sparks, Nv and the red/blue number 34 is Ukiah, Ca's Ben Chapman.

Am I close?

Yeah, I keep forgetting that the upload shrinks the photo quite a bit, LOL. My copy of that shot is much bigger. ;)

It's still fun to look at these old shots.

That poor guy Mr. Carelli.....While living in Florida in 2004 we boogied from Hurricane Ivan to stay with the in laws up in North Carolina.  Went to visit Harvicks shop right after it was completed and met Kevins Mother in law, Joyce.  I was curious as to how much he paid for somebody to get started in the industry of NASCAR working on the cars and what not.  Her response was, " Honey, we all love Kevin to death and what he has done, but he is by far the cheapest person in NASCAR to work for."

So, it just makes me wonder what he pays a spotter.......yes.......food for thought.

Speedy32,

I've heard that rumor too. If that's true, then there would probably be a lot of turnover at Kevin Harvick Inc with employees looking for better deals. I believe the Harvick's and Rick Carelli are long time friends, so that my play into it.

HPD.....it has occured to me that they may be good friends too.  Like the way Harvick stepped out and gave Hornaday a job when alot of people thought he was done for and over the hill to drive anything.  Probably just another person Kevin is paying back a favor too.  He may be a cheapskate, but he has a good heart.

Very AWESOME pics!! I love the old shots! I lived in Medford until 1983, and

then lived in Cottage Grove until 1992.  I remember every car Dane Smith raced

from 1975 until now. If you went to the races at Medford during the wedge car era,

chances are pretty good that you were a Dane Smith fan. Excellent driver, with ex-

cellant equiptment; a true class act.   I dig the shot of Don Tilford at Chico. Nocetti

cars were hot for 5 yrs. or so, especially in CA.   "DRIFTER" do you have any shots

of Scott Bloomquist??  I mean pics of him before he was the legend he is now, like

the Chico race in 83?  It sure would be cool to see some!  I was at most of the Anderson shows that you have shared pics of.

I remember Detjens just being unbelievably fast!! He and Jimmy Walker were the only 2 drivers to average over 100mph around the 1/2 mile at Altamont (then Bernal)

Oren Prosser is in his 60's and races Sprints at Ventura last I heard.

I Love all these old pics of Fox, Ruttman, Phillips, Keck, Dane, Chase, Schmidt, Reggie Ayeres, Reg Kennedy, Vaughn/Becker, Tilford, Odie,ETC,ETC the list goes on, and, on.

Does anyone have any photos of Markey James Winston West cars?  I'd really like see some.

And "Drifter" do you have any photos of Ron Richey of Medford? I'd love to see some of his cars, as he is my dad. Also of my brothers, Mike, and Lonnie if you have them it would be awesome to see.

Thanks to everyone that has contributed to this thread, I'm really glad I found it!!!! Quite a stroll down memory lane. When I get set-up to do it I'll post some shots I hope you all appreciate

Thanks

Victor,

Welcome! It's great that you found this site. You and I probably passed each other on several occasions in the 70's and 80's at the old Medford Raceway.

I remember your dad, Ron very well. I have a photo of him in a blue 64 or 65 Chevelle that I've uploaded to the Remembering Dane Smith thread on this site. I'm going to try to keep those shots over there rather than loading them in two places.

Living in the Grove from 83 on, you probably have some great memories of that neat race track. If you have any photos to share from there please do.

That 1983 race at Chico was awesome. I do have shots of everybody at that race, including a 19 year old Scott Bloomquist in a black 18 with red flames, but I haven't located all of them yet. I will upload them once I find them.

I remember talking to Dane at Shasta the first time Detjens showed up there and they said he was in another time zone. He would have won both races he ran there, but something broke the first time.

I did see that Roarin Oren Prosser is racing non-wing sprint cars in SoCal these days. How cool is that? I'm pretty sure I won't be doing anything nearly that cool when I get to my 60's.

Here's a link to a shot of the Teddy Bear, Markey James Winston West Chevelle that I found out on the web. He raced this car on the dirt too... Look how stock this car looks. The rear fenders are not even cut....

Thanks Drifter!!!!!

Great shot of Markey!  I'm sure we probably bumped elbows at Ray & Daves Action photos at the old Medford Raceway.

I do have some cool pics from the GROVE, and other tracks too. When I figure out how to put pics on the computer, I will share.

I have Shots of Jay Bugbee, Robert Hand, David Gould, and many, many others.

I enjoyed the shot of Doyle Dendy. He raced the Hamms I-5 challenge series and was a top contender in the 86-88 years.

My Buddy James grew up in Placerville, and was a huge Don Tilford fan! He appreciated that Chico photo of him. He also mentioned that Bloomquist ventured to Placerville as a young racer, and got taken to school by Tilford.

Mark Welch is another driver that I would like to see pics of. Didn't he win the bounty that they put on Dane Smith???

Thanks for the cool photos. My Dad will get a kick out of seeing his old Chevelle. He's 71 yrs. young, and is threatening to race next year. He raced from 1959-67, and then from 74-86. As we all know, once the racing bug bites, it's in your blood forever!!

Thanks again to all for sharing these photos!!!!!!!!!

highplainsdrifter................thanks for the pic of Kenny Wheaton.  KW is a close friend of our family and in fact the #34 of KW's is the number my son now runs on his Dirt Late Model.  KW still finds his way to Willamette Speedway from time to time to watch the ole #34 run the high line.

How's this for a wild shot from the Copper World in 1984 or so?

The white Trick number 1 was driven by Jimmy Insolo on that day, the red 5 is Jim Thirkettle and the white and red car is Bobby Allison. Not sure about the rest.

I would guess the pic was taken by Ken's wife who is rather handy with a camera........I have seen this same pic in the Wheaton family archives.

Here's a very unique late model from the late 80's, 1986 I think. This is Dick Trickle in an ASA Gran Marque late model. This series didn't last long, but the cars were very cool. V6 based late models that were going to be a less expensive entry into the ASA. It didn't catch on very well.
