Sidelines, thanks. I just got my scanner up and running, so I'm working my way through the photos I have. I don't have a lot of photos, but what I do have is some good stuff from Southern Oregon and Northern California.

What are you looking for?

By the way, the two photos of the Winston West race I posted are from the Ken-Kel Raceway park in Coos Bay, Oregon. A very fast 1/4 mile asphalt track at that time. It's now a dirt track and has been re-opened recently.

Thanks for the reply Any1But24. I thought it was a Kit Car, but I wasn't sure. The Kit Car program was pretty neat and I like to find photos of those cars when I can.

He ran very well that day and I believe he finished in the top five. Art Roth won that race.

I think this one was a kit car, does anybody remember who's it was?  I think he still races up at Port Angeles.  It looks like Mike Sauls' mom getting into the Duster in the background.

This was the heyday of the open comp superstock.  I think this car still does, and always will, hold the all time track record at Spanaway for a stock car.  Check out Larry Gunselman's #43 in the background.  I think that was a Corvette body.

Here's another IDC shot.  Anybody recognize this one?  He must have had to change his number for the IDC.  You probably can't see it, but on the original I can see part of his usual number around the edges of the zero.

This looks like the start of an early tour race.  I'm not sure if it was the Nascar NW tour, or the ASA Silver Creek series.

Here's the "A" trophy dash for the SCAR superstocks at Spanaway around '77 or '78.  Can anybody name these guys?

Here's another one from Spanaway, I think it was '80.  This car was driven by Al Rang at the beginning of the year, but in this shot J.J. Zaffino is behind the wheel.  Bud Lunore is on the left, and the other guy is car owner Larry Vanyi.  This body started out as a Ford Maverick, and I think Larry made the fiberglass front end himself.  I always thought this car was cool, different from everything else.

Speaking of the Sauls' family, here's an old shot of one of Bill's cars before a trophy dash.  You can see Willis Cooper in one of Austin Hanson's Mopars, and Mac Morvant in the Chevy II in the background.

Awsome shots!!! I remember Garrett Evans first time in a race car at Wenatchee (He now owns WVSO) It was Gary Lumsdens 68 Ford Cougar. He then bought Don Dowdy's old Plymouth Scamp from the old NASCAR Limited Sprtsman Division. Here is another shot from Evergreen. A couple of gorgeous cars from their day.

I love it! I've been looking for these shots forever!

The 83 is Jim Lovelace. Yes, he still races at PA.

The #02 Chevelle is (or was) Roy Haslam's. I'm not certain it's him in the photo. It looks like another Canadian, Reg Kennedy in the blue and white Duster two cars over.

The red 92 at Spanaway would have to be Ken Longley. I don't know about the others, but a number 45 Pontiac sounds like Leonard Sundholm to me???

In the last shot, next to Jerry Berschauer, is that Jack Jeffery in the 88?

How about a shot of Ron Eaton on his way to winning the Nor Cal 150 at Shasta in 1980? This was a good race for the Northwest stars as I do believe Roy Smith was second, Roy Haslam was fourth.

The blue 52 is California's Don Graham.

The #45 was Dick Boness Jr.  That was some good racing back then.  This is the "A" dash, you see Longley was 2nd fast time with a 6 cylinder in that falcon.  It was cool to watch him race against all the v8s.  I think he even won a championship in it.

My first thought was Jackie Kuper in the #88, but I'm not sure, that car doesn't look too familiar.

I thought I would throw this up.......its not a stock car but a very recognizable car. There also isnt a drag forum and it kind if ties to our theme here. This should be an easy guess for those looking for a quiz. Enjoy.

I need to get a new scanner. Have some old pics of Mike Miller's funny car and for you West Coasters, Russ Dunmire's 442 at Puyallup Raceway. Also have some pics of Jerry " The King" Ruth at Deer Park Dragstrip and at the time the Funny Car world record holder, Oregon's Kenny Goodell before and after the car burnt to the ground at Deer Park also. Damn, I'm dating myself here

This shot is from Shasta in October of 1979. Wisconsin star Larry Detjens in the 25 and the winner of this race, Ashland, Oregon's Don Harper in the 65. You can see the nose of Ron Eaton's car behind Harper and in the background pits is the Buick Starfire of Coos Bay, Oregon's Jack Keck.

One more for tonight. This is Redding's Bill Schmitt at Redwood Acres Raceway in Eureka, California in 1978. He won a 50 lap special called the "North Coast Dirt Track Classic" this day in one of his Winston West Ventura's over Jimmy Walker, Dan Bradbury, Daryl Gardner and Dan Simkins. In the background is the white and blue Maverick of Joe Droivold, the gold Nova of Roger Lorenzini, Sr and the very famous yellow and blue Chevy II (with a Sunbird nose) of Cottage Grove star Jay Bugbee. This was fun race to watch.

Here's a question Rick might know. Who drove this car at Skagit the year before (while Eaton still owned it) at their annual Open Stock Car race?

rickt,

You are right, Tim Williamson was a super star in the making. I don't remember any other west coast racer rising as fast as he did in that time. From what I read, the crash that killed him didn't appear at first to be that bad, but it was a side impact and he wasn't protected from that well enough. It would have been great to see him rise through the ranks....

Bob Davidson pin striped a couple cars, a helmet & a dirt kart of mine in the early 80's...it helped that my room mate was his soon to be son in-law. I talked to him last year @ GH fairgrounds Unfinished Nats.
