You are right, Tim Williamson was a super star in the making. I don't remember any other west coast racer rising as fast as he did in that time. From what I read, the crash that killed him didn't appear at first to be that bad, but it was a side impact and he wasn't protected from that well enough. It would have been great to see him rise through the ranks....
I was there and the crash did not look that bad. It was more of a side impact which we have all found out are the worst..

Can anyone name this guy? It's Yuba City, California's Tony Valente. Very cool Monza bodied late model...
The yellow Camaro in the background pits is Billy Clarkson.

The Snake picture was from Spokane 1972, the car that Bill Schmitt was trying to pass on that program was David Pearson in a Jefferson prepared Granada #12. The old Silver Fox was here for the race. Here is another easy one from the same day at Spokane 1972 you gotta love the safety rails throughout the joint!!! Enjoy! Al out Attachment: IMG.jpg (Downloaded 555 times)

That pic is "Big Daddy". The blowover in Spokane, I'm not sure if it was the first one but, if I recall that one nearly had him retire. I believe he was tore up pretty bad in that one. (Chuckling) He and A.J. Foyt are 2 of the baddest mothers who ever walked the earth.
I found this info after my post:
In 1987, after his second blowover (the term was invented to describe Garlits' overbackward wheelie in Swamp Rat XXX at the 1986 Summernationals) in two years in Spokane, Wash., Garlits retired yet again. He returned in 1992 with Swamp Rat 32, equipped with a monostrut rear wing, in an effort to become the first to exceed 300 mph, but he didn't debut the car until the Southern Nationals, one month after Kenny Bernstein ran the first 300-mph speed at the Gatornationals. Garlits had driven at a national event just once since 1992, when he competed at this year's U.S. Nationals in Gary Clapshaw's car. As he had done so many times over the years all over the country, Garlits brought a roaring crowd to its feet when he ran his much coveted first four-second e.t. and 300-mph speed in Sunday qualifying, 4.720 and 303.37 mph. Afterward, Garlits, four months shy of his 70th birthday, announced his intention to find a sponsor and resume driving once again.
Call him what you will -- "Big Daddy," "Swamp Rat," "the Old Man" -- but with his status as the top driver in NHRA's first 50 years, call Don Garlits "the Best."

I do not remember a blow over but I do remember seeing Jerry Ruth and Gary Beck go through the traps and both sets of valve covers were blown 100 feet in the air, side by side. I was only 5 at the time. Here is another pic from that day!!Attachment: IMG.jpg (Downloaded 530 times)

Minnesota State Fair, Labor Day weekend, 1988. Rusty and Kenny Wallace, Dale Earnhardt, Davey and Bobby Allison and Late great Alan Kulwicki all ran that day. I am still trying to dig up more shots.

Anyone remember who used to drive that truck to the races for Eaton and usually slept under it on overnighters?

Rickt,
OK, who is it? I don't know any of Eaton's crew.
Chuck#16,
Cool shot of a Tbird late model. Ford product...hmm. Galpin Ford was in SoCal, so I'm thinking Jim Thirkettle?

I would guess the 31 car is Ron Hornaday Sr.
A little new again, but here's a few from Evergreen in the early 80's. This is Leonard Sundholm and Wayne Crum, 1983.

Speedy,
Cool old shot from the 60's. I love that the flagman is right there emphatically waving the checkers at the winner. I'm not old enough to recognize the track or the car, so how about a few questions to help? Is he from the Northwest or Southwest? What's he most famous for?

| HPD......the black and white pic is from 1960 or '61. The driver is from the NW. The track is Portland. This driver raced right up until he passed from a heart attack in 1996, and left a son who still races occasionally in a dwarf and a full sized hardtop. There.....thats enough clues for now.....lol Last edited on Tuesday Dec 18th, 2007 02:07 AM by Speedy32

I think this is PRE '94. By 1994 Evans was racing a Ford Thunderbird in the NW tour. But if this is only a latemodel then I could be wrong.

This is such a great thread, and brings back so many memories. I was brought up in an "open wheel" family, hence I seldom saw races where the stock car guys were the main show on the card. Most of the shows I saw were with the stock car guys as the support show...but looking back, I got to see an awful lot of really good stock car drivers race...Dick Bown, Ron Eaton and Herschell McGriff on pavement...all the way to Don Latting and Floyd Allen on the dirt at Skagit.
Here's a picture request...does anyone have pictures of Dick Bown running his '57 Chevt at Portland Speedway that they could post?

The 07 is, always was, and always will be Ivan Baldwin. Ivan and his crew chief, Gary Nelson are as much responsible for how late model cars are built to this day as Howe and Dillon. They created the industry. Wierd ones like Bemco and Randercar never really took off.
Attached is one of the first Howe space frame type late model cars. The #1 Sundholm car above is a Baldwin with a steel Camaro body and a fiberglass front end. Revolutionary at the time.
I think the 85 is also Ron Hornaday, Sr.
