We sold that nova to a guy in PA if memory serves me correct. And yes, Leonski still has the Omega in his shop. Just talked to him a few days ago about it. Maybe I will run over there on New Years day and snap a couple shots of it if he is gonna be around..

sidelines04,
Very cool. Thanks for locating a shot of Mike Hurlbert's Bud Light car. He bought that car from Dane Smith and Vern Gilmore. That was the original 'R' car Camaro that they bought from Don Harper back in 1980/81. Rogue Racing enterprises in Phoenix, Oregon built that car for Harper to run in the $15k to win Oregon Carpet Exchange race at Medford.
Seeing Tim Levin's car again was an added bonus for me. He raced that car in Medford on more than one occasion. My understanding is that he went Sprint Car racing after that.
I will keep this going by adding another shot from Shasta's 1979 NorCal 150. This is a shot I took from the grandstand after the green was dropped. Every time I look at this I smile....
Can anyone name them all? Well, it's Mike Chase in the 02, Frank Swords in the 2, Roy Smith in the 11, Jim Robinson in the 78, Bill Schmitt in the 73, Ron Eaton in the 7, Don Harper in the 65 and the nose of Larry Detjens in the 25. Harper won the race, Eaton was second, Chase third, Detjens fourth and Swords 5th.

Here's a shot of Redding's Jerry Ayers at Roseburg for an open comp special in 1979. Jerry's race cars were always great looking, well built and fast. This car was just sinister looking to me!
This race was wild. Everyone who took the lead seemed to break or flatten a tire. It was ultimately won by the racing farmer, Phil Goulet in a Winston West Nova. He wasn't the fastest all day, but he didn't break or blow a tire either.

Great shot's sidelines04 and rickt. Thanks for posting.
There is a complete video of the 1985 Western 150 at Shasta on YouTube with Harper driving that black Camaro. Mike Chase blew the field away that day in a Fuge chassied Camaro #31. Early on, Garrett Evans took the lead and looked like he might check out, but something broke about 20 laps in or so.
Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SjVH4abjoc
I will continue this thread with a shot of Don Harper, Bill Schmitt, Larry Detjens and Jimmy Walker at Shasta in 1979.

I actually went there once back in '97. The only track I had ever seen that numbered their cars by class. I don't remember specifically how they were numbered but it was odd. For example, street stocks were #'s in the 400's, mini stocks would be in the 300's and so on. I had never seen that before. Also, it was one of the few shorttracks I had been to that had grandstands on both sides of the track. It's a shame it's gone, but it was pretty much smack in the middle of neighborhoods and such. Never a good place for a racetrack.

That looks incredible! Bowman Gray, huh. Where is that? I need more information...I might have to take a vacation sometime! The more I look at that picture, the more it looks like a football stadium that someone turned into a race track. Is that possible?
The only other place I've been to with seating (for spectators and not just pit stands) on both sides was in Flemington, NJ. The track was actually more of a square (it was probably the oddest track I've ever been to) and they had seating on 3 of the 4 sides. Before it closed they ran some Craftsman Trucks there and the track actually made it into an expansion pack (along with Evergreen I believe) for an old Papyrus NASCAR video game. Interesting place.

Okay, I looked it up. Winston-Salem, NC. That's perfect. I'd like to take a trip anyway to NC to see some racing. Always wanted to see Orange County Speedway and it's only about an hour and a half from Rougemont, NC to Winston-Salem. Sounds like a plan!

| Bankerbill....all of my inlaws live 10 miles North of Winston Salem and vacation there is awesome. They live 40 miles from Petty museum, 10 miles from Harvick's shop, the Winston cup museum is in Winston Salem. The wife and I went to another track and they ran USAC Focus Midgets, Carolina Vintage Assoc., Street stock, 2 classes of 4 cylinders, and Late models. The car count in each group varied from 8 to 20 but it was a good show. Here are a couple pic......now ya'll tell me what track it is.....lol.....same region. Hint: It has changed hands a 3 times in the past 6 years, but it a nice facility. Attachment: 100_0812.jpg (Downloaded 249 times) Last edited on Saturday Feb 2nd, 2008 05:15 AM by Speedy32

Bankerbill27.....
In response to your comment on Bowman Gray being around a footbal field, thats true. Thats the reason why thier season is so short....late May until late August. They have to coincide with football season and other athletics. The track is a true 1/4 mile with ZERO degrees banking. When the Cup series was Grand National, they ran 2 races a year there up until 72 or 73 I believe. They have one of Lee Petty's trophies from there in a race he won from 1952 at the Petty museum in Randelman, NC. If you know anybody that has the older PC game called NASCAR Legends......try it.....Bowman Gray is one of the tracks to race on it.

Being in that area, I'm guessing it's either Caraway or Ace Speedway, but I really have no idea.

| HPD......Thats not it. I will tell you.......its currently called Friendship Speedway located in Elkin NC. When I was there, there was not very many people in the stands, and the car count wasnt outrageous. The nice thing was typical southern hospitality......the promoter stood at the front gate shaking every persons hand and greeted each patron personally. He stood there wearing a Racers For Christ T-shirt and after talkingh to him I found out he was a Pastor too.....lol

Speedy,
I've heard of Friendship Speedway, but never been there. It looks very nice. You're right about southern hospitality. The people down there are very friendly and treat you like a member of the family when you visit their track or restaurant or gas station, etc... I've made many a race trip to the south and it's always been fun.
Speedbuggy,
I'm a stickler for details too, so you made me go look up the details of that Skagit race. You're right, it was called the "Challenge Cup", not the "Late Model Dirt Cup". It was run for 4 or 5 years in June, July and August and it had different names over that time. The one I went to in 1984 was the Challenge Cup.
Here's the top four or five from that race from 1978 through 1984. How many of these names bring up a few memories? If anyone has any photos of these races, please share them.
"IDC Trail" 50 laps, June 3rd, 1978
1. Reg Kennedy, 2. Roy Smith, 3. George Benson, 4. Alan Raper and 5. Roy Haslam
"Northwest Series" 100 laps, June 14th, 1979
1. Roy Haslam, 2. Brian Green, 3. Ken Flammang, 4. Steve Starr and 5. Ron Esau
"Speedweek Northwest" 100 laps, July 20, 1980
1. Odie Robertson, 2. Ron Esau, 3. Red Farmer, 4. Dan Simkins and 5. Roy Haslam
" Speedweek Northwest" 50 laps, July 25, 1981
1. Odie Robertson, 2. Dane Smith, 3. Dick Smith, 4. Billy Clarkson and 5. Unknown
"Challenge Cup", 50 laps, August 7, 1982
1. Steve Vaughan, 2. Dane Smith, 3. Tony Valente, 4 Bob Bryson and 5. Unknown
"Challenge Cup", 50 laps, August 6, 1983
1. Bruce Rayburn, 2. Mike Hurlbert, 3. Marion Smiley, 4 Steve Vaughan and 5. Unknown
"Challenge Cup", 50 laps, August 4, 1984
1. Dane Smith, 2. Vic Blanc, 3. Fred Lundock, 4. Rick Becker and 5. Unknown

| Are those Skagit results? Red Farmer! Now there's a name. Heard him on Tony Stewart live a couple months ago. He wouldn't tell his age, just that he is closer to 80 than 70. Guy is still racing and looking forward to the Prelude to the Dream race at Eldora.
