Speedbuggy,
Yes, they are Skagit results. I was amazed to see Red's name on there also. I'm wondering who's car he drove that night as I doubt they towed Red's car from Alabama to Washington. Anyone know for sure?
Here's a photo of Red's Bopp chassied Mustang from that time frame...

I've heard of Friendship Speedway, but never been there. It looks very nice. You're right about southern hospitality. The people down there are very friendly and treat you like a member of the family when you visit their track or restaurant or gas station, etc... I've made many a race trip to the south and it's always been fun.
Speedbuggy,
I'm a stickler for details too, so you made me go look up the details of that Skagit race. You're right, it was called the "Challenge Cup", not the "Late Model Dirt Cup". It was run for 4 or 5 years in June, July and August and it had different names over that time. The one I went to in 1984 was the Challenge Cup.
Here's the top four or five from that race from 1978 through 1984. How many of these names bring up a few memories? If anyone has any photos of these races, please share them.
"IDC Trail" 50 laps, June 3rd, 1978
1. Reg Kennedy, 2. Roy Smith, 3. George Benson, 4. Alan Raper and 5. Roy Haslam
"Northwest Series" 100 laps, June 14th, 1979
1. Roy Haslam, 2. Brian Green, 3. Ken Flammang, 4. Steve Starr and 5. Ron Esau
"Speedweek Northwest" 100 laps, July 20, 1980
1. Odie Robertson, 2. Ron Esau, 3. Red Farmer, 4. Dan Simkins and 5. Roy Haslam
" Speedweek Northwest" 50 laps, July 25, 1981
1. Odie Robertson, 2. Dane Smith, 3. Dick Smith, 4. Billy Clarkson and 5. Unknown
"Challenge Cup", 50 laps, August 7, 1982
1. Steve Vaughan, 2. Dane Smith, 3. Tony Valente, 4 Bob Bryson and 5. Unknown
"Challenge Cup", 50 laps, August 6, 1983
1. Bruce Rayburn, 2. Mike Hurlbert, 3. Marion Smiley, 4 Steve Vaughan and 5. Unknown
"Challenge Cup", 50 laps, August 4, 1984
1. Dane Smith, 2. Vic Blanc, 3. Fred Lundock, 4. Rick Becker and 5. Unknown
I remember when those races were run at Skagit. Have several photos, mostly 1980 & on, buried somewhere in the files. Here's a bumper sticker from either 1980 or 81.

| Always enjoyed the Late Model open races. (in spite of my Sprint Car roots). I seem to remember Red Farmer being there. I think his legend has grown significantly in recent years. The one thing that I alway thought was a bummer was Skagit not allowing the TRUE open late model back in the day, with the big HUGE side dams and wings.

Rickt,
Yes I do believe this is the time when Odie was driving for Ron Eaton. I have read somewhere on this board that he won at least one of the two in Eaton's car. Not sure about the other.
Just an Old Guy,
Love the bumper stickers! You can probably tell I'm very nostalgic and anything like that is really cool to me. Please share any photos you have of that time with us.
Speedbuggy,
I'm just the opposite of you in that my roots are in the late models both on dirt and asphalt. In the mid 80's I moved to the San Jose area and as you can imagine I became a big sprint car fan. I spent many nights at Baylands and the San Jose Fairgrounds Speedway's before they closed and travelled to Watsonville, Chico, Santa Maria, Hanford and Bakersfield for sprint car races. I became a fan of Howard and Brent Kaeding, Lealand McSpadden, Chuck Gurney, Jimmy Sills and Steve Kent among many others. I saw some driving in those cars that you just don't see in any other type of race car.
You talked about Skagit not allowing the side boards and lexan on the late models. I never quite understood that, but it definitely made a difference in how fast the late models were. With the side boards, they never really lifted other than to set the car in the corner. It's kind of what brought about their demise in that those sideboards allowed for major horsepower to be used, which got very expensive.
Here's a shot of Howard Kaeding (Brent's dad) at the San Jose Fairgrounds Speedway from 1988 or so. Howard was really good at that track.

Everyone that got to particpate or watch the IDC races probably remember this car.
Wisconsin's Mike Miller and his very unusual for the time late model Olds Cutlass...

He won the 1975 Western Canadian Nascar Championship in a 67 Chelleve that was 11 years old and 400 pounds over the 3100 pound limit.. he finished every race and beat Eric Dowler, Bryce Mann , terrry Forsyth, Roy Haslem , and many more . He tried dirt at Skagit,, what a natural,, first time out with the same old beater he was quick time, He and Brian Green had a real rivalry going ,, they were both excellent on the dirt with basically no experience and blew the doors off all the hot dog regulars , Reggie went on to win many races with Carl Blomfelts Dodge and George Doonan's camaro.. Always fun to race with and party with after,, I have a million stories .

Rickt,
Thanks, back at ya with the avatar! Very cool!
The shot of Mike Miller is from Milwaukee. I haven't seen any photos of him from the Northwest. During the late 70's and early 80's, he was very tough to beat in that car anywhere he showed up.
NoFenders,
Reg Kennedy's Nova is very nasty looking. I didn't know he ran a Chevy. Everything I've seen of his was a Mopar of some kind. It looks like he just won the race and got a fairly nice trophy for his efforts. What track was that photo taken at?

| In that picture of Reg and his Nova , the car is brand new and out for a few shake down laps and some sponser photos (Molson Canadian was a Goood sponser) , at Langley Speedway in early 76.. The Trophy was for the 1975 Export A and Western Canadian Nascar Championship which we won the previous year.. Canadian Stock Car Products gave us a new rolling chassis so we built the new car,,it was pretty quick but we did have our problems with it.. The 5th race of the year in Port Angeles while racing for the lead with Eaton and Haslam a lapped car bounced off the wall into the RR quarter and away we went into the wall ,and almost up and over into the stands .. It was definitely front clip time . even the rearend was bent.. It was fixed for the IDC races a month later .. Ain't Racing Fun ... Attachment: RegPACrash76.JPG (Downloaded 461 times)

That picture reminds me of the days we used to sit in Turn six and watch the boys racing,, One of the last races Tim ran there about 1987 or 88 his car gave up coming through the esses and he coasted to the inside of turn 6 ,, ran across the race track and sat in the stands with a bunch of us maniacs and drank beer for the rest of the race,, Needless to say he didn't buy any ,,He didn't carry his wallet and credit cards in his driving suit pocket,,haha... I managed to find some of my old photos in the mass of stuff I have in my basement. I thought some of you Northwesterner's would like to see this shot of Roy Haslam at the old Medford Raceway in 1979. This was the 2nd annual "Oregon Carpet Exchange - Cabin Craft 150" paying $5000 to win. Yes, that's 150 laps on a 1/4 mile dirt track. It was black ice after about 30 laps....
Here's the top 10 in this feature:
1. Mike Chase, Redding, Ca; 2. Dane Smith, Medford, Or; 3. Jimmy Walker, Ferndale, Ca; 4. Don Tilford, Orangevale, Ca; 5. Roy Haslam, Victoria, BC; 6. Tom Wyatt, Medford, Or; 7. Billy Clarkson, Orangevale, Ca; 8. Loren Johnson, Medford, Or; 9. Markey James, Phoenix, Or; 10. Bruce Rayburn, Eagle Point, Or

Nice 1 Highplains
It was always nice to go to a race and start looking at the cars in the pits doing a car count and see his car there because you knew you had a one of the fast boys there to enjoy
Makes me think of the good days of speedweeks nw and woud see dowdy, jefferson, eaton, fox, jeffery's, and so many other great drivers and wild looking cars in the 80's to me there was never a better time in racing than then.

Here's a less than focused shot of Roseburg, Oregon's Bob Saily in 1977 in the red Vega that was so cool! This was taken at the old Eugene Speedway during an open comp special in August I believe. Bob finished second to Redding's George Bragg...
