HayWire Racing Sails To Victory -
Port Angeles, Wa. –
6-14-08 – The #68 HayWire Motorsports / KMB Design Groups / Print-NW / Ringers Gloves / Mauritsen Enterprises Toyota Camry set sail around lap30 during the Limited Late Model Racing Series Main Event in round 3 of the championship chase at Port Angeles Speedway, June 14th, 2008.
In what could only be described as true determination, the 68 HayWire Motorsports team approached the 3rd round of the LLMRS championship chase at Port Angeles Speedway with a list of focused goals in mind. After checking off a couple items on that list, and falling short of 1, the team found 1 item that was not on their list of goals, Victory Lane!
After a solid qualifying run found the team in the Trophy Dash, they checked off the first item on the previously mentioned list – Keep the string of Dashes alive. However, they fell short of the second item on the list as the #40 of Dylan Caldwell would set a new track record, taking that one away from “Terrible” Tim. “I was a little bummed about losing that record,” said driver “Terrible” Tim McDougald, “But records are made to be broken, and I get another shot at it later this season. At least we kept the Dash string alive. I was very happy with that. After Wenatchee, the car was tore up pretty good. We found a lot of stuff back at the shop that we missed at the track, so the damage was a lot more severe than we thought. The end result was that we had to change just about everything in the front end, and that meant we were heading to PA not really knowing how the geometry would react. I have to thank my crew; they did an amazing job preparing the car and really came through.”
Once the Trophy Dash was won by Canadian driver Tim Christy, the #68 Toyota Camry looked to the Heat Race in preparation for the Main Event. But that would be cut short as mechanical problems removed the team from the heat race. “I set the car down into turn 1 and couldn’t steer,” said “Terrible” Tim. “I guess we lost a bolt out of the steering linkage and 1 tire wasn’t turning with the other.” The #68 Toyota Camry would head to the pits for repairs.
The real show was to take place during the 50-lap Main Event. The The #68 HayWire Motorsports / KMB Design Groups / Print-NW / Ringers Gloves / Mauritsen Enterprises Toyota Camry would start on the inside of row 2 after the invert. Once the green flag dropped “Terrible” Tim would have to make a bold move to get out from behind the slower car of Jeff Mullins and start chasing the #06 of Canadian Tim Christy. “I knew Tim would fly from the green, he was considerably faster than Mullins, who I had to start behind. Going into 1 on about lap 2 Mullins slid up and I couldn’t help but jump in there. My spotter was telling me ‘3-wide, 3-wide’ and I was thinking ‘that wasn’t what I had planned’.” As “Terrible” Tim put his car underneath the #08 of Mullins, the #10 of Boyatt had made a move to the outside of Mullins to put the trio 3-wide on what is said to be a 1-lane track. McDougald would be the victor of this battle as he emerged in 2nd place; Boyatt would have to fall back in to 4th behind Mullins.
After a caution for the Boyatt/Caldwell incident, McDougald found himself right on Christy’s bumper. Back under green flag racing, McDougald would pressure Christy at every turn, finally making a dominating move on the outside to take the lead from Christy. “I tried him on the outside earlier and it didn’t work,” said McDougald “I knew I didn’t want to use up the car that early so I dropped back in line behind him. At some point my spotter told me the #10 car had gotten loose from behind Mullins, at that point I knew I needed to go so I made one last hard run to the outside and it worked. From there it was just laying down laps.”
The race would go green the rest of the way, as the #68 KMB Design Groups / Print-NW / Ringers Gloves / Mauritsen Enterprises Toyota Camry would start running 2 to 3 tenth’s a lap faster than the field, sailing away with the win. Coming to the checkered flag, McDougald would check off another item on the teams list, finish the night. In doing so, the team would find that added item on that list in the form of their first LLMRS victory as well as their first victory at Port Angeles Speedway. “I been coming here for a long time, and I’ve had a fast car on many of those visits,” said driver “Terrible” Tim. “It seems like something stupid always takes us out of contention. I can’t tell you how much it means to finally win here. My guys worked so hard to keep me in this thing. We had some problems early on, but they never give up. My hat’s off to them, this one’s for all my guys and all my sponsors. I can’t say enough about the great group we’ve got and the great sponsors who help make this happen. KMB Design Groups, Print-NW, Ringers Gloves, Mauritsen Enterprises and even our team sponsors, RPM Sales & Service & Old West Graphics. We thank every one of them because they are who make this happen.” The win marks the first Late Model win for Toyota in the Pacific Northwest. “I’m thrilled to be a part of this,” said McDougald. “One of the things I said I wanted to do this season was bring Toyota it’s first win. It’s race 3 and we’ve put the #68 Toyota Camry in victory lane for a Trophy Dash and now a Main Event. I’m very proud to be a part of this history making moment!”
After the victory, the team found themselves 4th in the LLMRS championship point standings, the final item on the previously mentioned list. The team has climbed from 9th place after the season opener to 4th place after round 3 to become a serious contender in a tough series that showcases some of the best drivers & teams as well as some of the Northwest’s best tracks.
Look for the #68 KMB Design Groups / Print-NW / Ringers Gloves / Mauritsen Enterprises Toyota Camry to continue to ride this wave as the HayWire Motorsports team continues their run in the 2008 LLMRS championship season. And be sure to catch the #92 RPM Sales & Service / Old West Graphics / Ringers Gloves / KMB Design Groups / Mauritsen Enterprises Pontiac Grand Prix on the Whelen All-American series schedule at Evergreen Speedway.
