Six-pack! Esteban wins another PHRA feature
Andrew Kunas
MADRAS, Ore. - Corey Esteban continued his march toward the PHRA dwarf car championship Saturday night at Madras Speedway by winning his sixth regular points race and his third straight. Throw in a show-up points race in July and Esteban now has seven wins overall this year. His win came on one of the hottest days of the year, as temperatures in the pit area approached 110 degrees.
Esteban, who won the club championship in 2006, started the 30-lap feature 12th. That still didn't stop the Gaston, Ore. driver from winning and completing a clean sweep at Madras Speedway for the second straight week as he also won his heat race and the A-Dash. His sweep at Sunset Speedway Park on August 2 gives him three in-a-row.
Mitch Meeuwsen took the lead at the start from the outside pole and held the top spot, ahead of teammate Rick Adams, until Esteban reached the two in the latter half of the race. Meeuwsen, who has a non-points race victory at Coos Bay Speedway this season, held his ground until Esteban got around him as they raced around slower cars. Meeuwsen, who along with Adams and Esteban is part of the four-car RACE CARS Inc. team, finished second and Adams was third.
Dave Cantu, the fourth RACE CARS Inc. driver, completed the top-four sweep by the team with his fourth place finish. Cantu was happy enough just to finish the race as he had a string of non-finishes due to bad luck that involved crashes. Third-year driver Troy Kunas, who like Cantu has had his share of bad luck this year, had a career-best fifth place finish in his first race back after his car was severely damaged in a multi-car accident July 13 at Sunset.
While Kunas held down the fifth position throughout the race, intense racing went on behind him as Clay Goben, Jim Pavel, and former PHRA champions Charles Millar and Richard Petty all battled for the sixth position throughout the race. Pavel held sixth place for most of the race until losing a couple of positions in the later laps. Petty, who entered the race second in points, got around Goben for sixth with less than two laps left and would finish there ahead of Goben, Pavel, Millar and Jim Fischer, who rounded out the top ten.
Newcomer Justin Flagg, running his first race with PHRA, finished 12th in his debut. The event saw three yellow flags, all for spins.
Esteban's dash victory came over Adams, Cantu and Ron Love. Cantu won the the first heat race of the evening over Love, Adam Stoecklein and Kunas. Esteban, despite missing hot laps, won the second heat race from the sixth starting position and finished ahead of Adams, Meeuwsen and Pavel.
Next for the PHRA is a two-night event at River City Speedway in St. Helens, Ore. Saturday, August 30 is a non-points event recently added to the schedule. Thanks to sponsorhip donations, there will be a purse for that event. Sunday, August 31 is the originally scheduled points race, which will be the club's last at River City Speedway for 2008. After the PHRA's first ever visit to Willamette Speedway on September 13, the club returns to Madras Speedway to close its 20th Anniversary season on September 20.

Great night of racing in all divisions! A little bit of cloud cover at just the right time made the evening more enjoyable! Man that was some sunset and moon rise! We don`t get to see that often on this side of the Cascades.
I hope Pat Canfield and Reno Marr are doing OK today. Both took nasty flips!

Actually Mesprint I didnt quite get all the way over (but it was close), just sucks cause I felt like we were the car to beat and I was just taking my time with the leader. Nothin worse than gettin taken out by a guy who only has 4 races in these cars and is already driving over his head. I talked to Reno after the race he is fine as well

I thought you went over ! All I saw was dust and wheels really high in the air! Bummer that you couldn`t continue! My son and I were talking about Reno just before he went over, saying he`d be in trouble if he ever went over cause his helmet was above the roll cage! Glad you both are fine! Madras is a really good fit for you guys, seems like you can get more speed there as opposed to RC or Sunset. Bigger sweeping turns. I know I`ll be going again!

I'm surprised neither my old man (37 dwarf) or Clay Goben (#25 dwarf) went over when they tangled on the front stretch and spun into the infield together at the end of their heat race.
A few hard wrecks and other crazy moments Saturday night, and we even had an ambulance come for the dad of one of the dwarf car drivers. Suffered a heat stroke . Thankfully he turned out OK and returned to the track to visit everyone...his son event unloaded his car and joined the field for the feature, finishing in the top ten.

I was wondering about that ambulance visit. That was quite a ride your dad took! I was planning on a visit to the pits after, but then they brought out all the winners and I saw several teams leaving.....they didn`t mention anything about visiting the pits after, so I figured maybe things are different there. Besides, I was trying to get to The Black Bear Diner before they closed. (didn`t make it)

Thanks for the update on the heat stroke victim. We heard about it on the police scanner and his vitals were not good on the way to the hospitol.
