PHRA celebrates 20th Anniversary Saturday at Madras

This Saturday at Madras Speedway, the Pacific Hardtop Racing Association dwarf car club will celebrate its 20th anniversary of its incorporation with a race at Madras Speedway in north central Oregon.
The PHRA, formed in 1988, has become one of the top dwarf car groups on the west coast, running events at a number of tracks across the state of Oregon. Madras Speedway has been a regular stop in recent years and the club has chosen Saturday’s event to celebrate its anniversary. After the races, the club’s drivers will enjoy a party in the pit area, specifically driver Dave Cantu‘s pit.
Corey Esteban of Gaston, Ore. will lead the series to Madras with a 66-point advantage over Sandy’s Macky Cushing. Esteban won his fourth points race of the season last Saturday at Sunset Speedway Park in Banks, Ore. Esteban, the 2006 PHRA champion, also won the preliminary night event of the Back to the 50’s classic, which paid show-up points only.
Cushing has two victories himself, the most recent coming on July 26 at River City Speedway in St. Helens, Ore. His other win came on May 31 at Sunset.
After being rained out at Madras on May 3, the PHRA ran twice more at Madras Speedway in June. Esteban won the June 7 event while Hillsboro, Ore. driver Rick Adams won on June 14. Adams, who comes into Saturday’s event third in points, has two points race victories this season and also has non-point triumph at Coos Bay Speedway.
Former club champion Richard Petty sits fourth in points with Shane Youngren fifth and Charles Millar sixth. Mitch Meeuwsen, who also has a non-point victory at Coos Bay, is seventh in points. Mike Chadwick, Dave Cantu and Clay Goben round out the top ten in the PHRA point standings.
After Saturday’s event, PHRA races once more at Madras on Saturday, August 16. PHRA will also close its season at Madras Speedway on Saturday, September 20. PHRA also has remaining events at River City Speedway and Willamette Speedway in Lebanon, Ore.
