The bottom line for sprint car teams, fans and vendors is: Get your vacation and travel plans set, as the best of the 2008 racing season has been saved for last!
Event #1 – The inaugural Cowtown Sprint Nationals, October 10-11, Cowtown Speedway, Kennedale (D/FW), TX. The largest total purse in track history is on the line for this inaugural event, and it’s a sanctioned national point race for the American Sprint Cars on Tour (ASCoT).
Drivers such as Gary Wright, Jason Johnson and Wayne Johnson will battle the strong contingent of Cowtown drivers including Kevin Ramey and George White. Joining them will be drivers from all over the country all slugging it out in a 30-lap, 24-car, $2,000 to win feature race on Friday October 10th and a monster $5,000 to win, 35-lap, 24-car championship feature on October 11th.
This event also kicks off the2nd annual Short Track Shootout (STS). The STS will combine points from the Cowtown Sprint Nationals plus the Short Track Nationals (STN, see Event #3 below). The top point getters will compete in this bonus race, which will immediately follow the STN championship feature. More specifics for the 2008 event will be announced soon. To view the 2007 STS recap, please visit http://www.darinshort.com/shootout.html - an exclusive title sponsorship opportunity is available for this affordable and attention getting event, please contact Darin at dssm93@msn.com for details.
And as an added bonus, the wildly popular 8th annual Topless 100 will join the sprint car action and will take place following the sprint car feature event.
Fans can save $10 by purchasing their tickets online at the track website in advance, as 2-day adult grandstand pass will cost just $35. Or, tickets will be available at the gate on race night for $20 on Friday and $25 on Saturday. Youth and child tickets will remain at just $5 and $2 on each night. Visit http://www.CowtownSpeedway.com for complete details, including the event flyer.
Event #2 – The 35th annual Devil’s Bowl Winter Nationals¸October 17th and 18th, Mesquite, TX. Traveling across town the for next weekend, this ASCoT national points event has provided fans with great sprint car racing action throughout the years. For complete event information, please visit http://www.DevilsBowl.com .
Event #3 – The 21st annual Hoosier Racing Tire Short Track Nationals presented by O’Reilly Auto Parts, I-30 Speedway, Little Rock, AR; October 23rd-25th. About 4 ½ hours up the freeway on Interstate 30 from D/FW, the next stop is the wild and drama filled Short Track Nationals. The championship event pays $15,000 to win and $2,100 to start.
Last year’s record-setting event attracted more than 100 sprint teams from over 20 states and Canada. It is also the final national point’s race for the 2008 ASCoT season, with the champion taking home a check for a whopping $50,000.
The 4th annual STN Trade Show and Midway returns to provide race teams and fans a chance to visit with industry manufacturers, plus get great deals on racing apparel and merchandise from a variety of vendors.
Vendor applications for the Show are now being accepted. Please visit http://www.darinshort.com/STN.html for all of the details. Display space is very affordable and includes 3-day pit passes. Advance registration is required for vendors, and there is no admission charge for fans during the daytime hours of the STN Trade Show and Midway.
The STN also plays home to a new promotion for 2008, the COMP Cams Gambler’s Challenge. More specifics on this promotion will be announced soon, and will allow top finishing drivers a shot at extra bonus money, courtesy of COMP Cams.
The Short Track Shootout will round out the STN weekend, giving fans one last exciting race to wrap up the weekend. Again, event details pending sponsorship, and an announcement will be made when available.
If you’ve not attended the STN, make your travel plans now and find out why fans from all corners of the country keep coming back year after year. A very affordable 3-day grandstand pass is available, visit http://www.I-30Speedway.com for details.
The following weekend, October 30th through November 1st is the rainout date for the STN. It is also the series finale for the WoO at Charlotte, NC and the NASCAR teams will be at Texas Motor Speedway.
Event #4 – 2nd Annual November Sprint Shootout (NSS), November 7-8, Cowtown Speedway, Kennedale, TX. The inaugural NSS in 2007 left fans screaming “we want more!”
So it’s been decided. You’re going to get what you asked for:
More money is on the line for the 2008 NSS. More racing, as Twin 25’s for the sprint cars have been added to the Friday night program. More cars will start the Saturday NSS Championship. And the popular ASCS passing points system will go into effect on Friday night.
Similar to the Cowtown Sprint Nationals, big money is on the line for the sprint cars. The Friday Twin 25’s will each pay $1,000 to win. All sprint car drivers will qualify for one of the Twin 25’s and are guaranteed payback on Friday night.
And in the event that the sprint car field is too large for Twin 25’s; a third, $1,000 to win feature race will be added, making it Triple 25’s!
Saturday’s last chance races will fill the balance of the field for the 35-lap November Sprint Shootout, with the winner picking up a cool $5,000; with 2nd paying $4000, 3rd $3000, 4th $2000, and down to $400 to start. And the starting field has been expanded to 22 cars. All non-qualifiers Saturday night will receive at least $100.
Ticket pricing and advance 2-day grandstand passes are exactly the same as the October Cowtown Sprint Nationals. Fans are encouraged to take advantage of the $10 savings online. Excellent purses for the modifieds, winged 600’s and limited modifieds have been posted, and they will complete the racing card.
Please visit http://www.CowtownSpeedway.com to view the complete NSS event flyer, driver pre-registration form, online ticket sales and for more information. You won’t want to miss this season-ending event, as last year’s event kept fans buzzing all season long. Please visit http://www.darinshort.com/NSS.html for a recap, pictures and video clips of the 2007 NSS.
Travel tips for these four events. October 10th will be upon us before we know it. And with a bit of planning and coordination, teams and fans can save a lot of time and money by taking advantage of some of these travel tips:
For Events #1, 2 and 4 in the D/FW area – there are two fly-in options: DFW International (services all major gateways) and Dallas Love Field (includes Southwest airlines and generally more ‘regional’ flights). For the STN, Little Rock National Airport is a popular hub in the mid-South and there are many flights available to all gateways featuring American Airlines and Southwest Airlines.
For flight options, http://www.Travelocity.com is a great source of information. If you choose to wait to make your plans within two weeks of travel time, their ‘Last Minute Packages’ offers excellent low-priced options that include flights, hotels and car rentals. http://www.Priceline.com is also good for finding last-minute deals on flights and hotels. http://www.Hotwire.com is good for finding deals on hotels.
The STN also has several ‘host’ hotels offering special rates to teams and fans. Please visit http://www.I-30Speedway.com for more information.
We hope to see many new teams and faces at these big season-ending events, as we look forward to building these events each and every year to give race teams and fans what they want most: more!
NW Sprint Fans/Teams. Here's some notes specific for your area regarding these events:
- Last year Travis Rutz made his first visit to the STN, and had a very strong run. He was leading a heat race, and on the last lap, made contact with another car and got upside down. He later received the STN Trade Show Vendors 'Hard Luck Award' and picked up lots of cool stuff, much to his surprise. He had no idea why we called him down in front of the crowd to be interviewed to receive the award.
- Also, last year I was able to find several NW fans crazy-cheap flights from Seattle to Little Rock. The same can be found for flights into DFW for the other 3 events on this schedule. So getting here may be very affordable, with some planning. Again, Southwest.com, AA.com, Travelocity.com and Priceline.com are the hot sites to find deals. And if you wait until the last minute, make sure to visit Travelocity.com and click 'Last Minute Deals' for flights/rooms/cars. Many times they can get you here for a fraction of the price that airlines charge.
- Hope to see some of you back this year for 4 weeks of exciting season-ending sprint car action!

'Bill W' Set To Announce Inaugural Cowtown Sprint Nationals
9/15/08, DarinShort.com. Driver entries are flowing in, a record total purse for the track has been posted, avid fans are snatching up 2-passes on the track website, and the drama is starting to build for the inaugural Cowtown Sprint Nationals. The event is set for October 10-11 at Kennedale (D/FW) Texas's Cowtown Speedway.
And now, the popular 'Bill W' has confirmed that he will be on hand to call the sprint portion of the Cowtown Sprint Nationals.
Monroe Iowa's, Bill Wright (AKA Bill W), has been on the media side of the sport for 12 years as a journalist, website editor, broadcaster and announcer. His weekly 'Knoxville News' recap can be found on racing sites worldwide. Bill W is one of the voices of HoseheadsRadio.com, which has broadcast all the shows from the Knoxville Raceway as well as the Short Track Nationals in Little Rock the last several years.
“I’ve always wanted to get to Cowtown,” says Bill. “The Cowtown Sprint Nationals is the perfect opportunity, and I appreciate the opportunity they’ve given me to be a part of it all. We’ll see the best in the 360 business on the high-banked ¼ mile! It doesn’t get any better than that!”
Cowtown Speedway is very excited to have Bill W on hand, which will further enhance the race fan's overall experience while at Cowtown Speedway. Joining Bill W to call the ‘Topless 100’ portion of the weekend's events will be guest announcer Tim Looney, who is well known to the D/FW area race fans.
The Cowtown Sprint Nationals is a 2-day event, featuring many of the top sprint car drivers in the country. It is a national point race for ASCoT, plus the final 2008 point events in the ASCS Sooner region. It is also the first of four huge season-ending sprint car specials in the area that wrap up back at Cowtown on November 7-8 for the November Sprint Shootout.
National tour drivers including Gary Wright, Jason Johnson, Wayne Johnson, Zach Chappell and GarryLee Maier will be on hand. They will be joined by many more drivers from the ASCoT tour, ASCS Sooner region, local ‘hot shoes’ plus ‘invaders’ from across the United States. Early estimates are for around 50 sprint teams to converge on the Cowtown ¼ mile high-banks to battle it out.
The sprint cars will have two complete shows, with heat races (using the ASCS passing points system) and feature races. Capping off Friday will be a 30-lap, 22-car feature event paying $2,000 to win and $300 to start. The top four finishers will lock into Saturday night’s 35-lap championship that pays a winner’s share of $5,000 and down to $400 for 24th. The sprint portion of the weekend’s purse tops $40,000.
Drivers planning on competing at the Cowtown Sprint Nationals are urged to preregister at the track website.
Advance 2-day adult grandstand passes are only available through the track website. 2-day passes are just $35, which will save $10 off walk-up prices on race weekend. Adult general admission on race night will be $20 for October 10, and $25 for October 11. Youth and kids ticket prices remain the same as weekly pricing, which are $5 and $2 for each race night, and are available at the track on race night only.
For complete Cowtown Sprint Nationals event information, including event flyer, 2-day passes, track information, driver preregistration; and more, please visit http://www.CowtownSpeedway.com and click the ‘Cowtown Nationals’ link.
We look forward to seeing all of you, plus Bill W and Tim Looney, for the Cowtown Sprint Nationals at the Fastest Lil' Dirt Track In Texas…Cowtown Speedway!

Couple of notes since yesterday's update:
- A lot of drivers still aren't aware of our request to pre-register. So when this update came out, we received another 6 entries from LA, NE, TX and OK.
-So right now we have 36 confirmed sprint entries. I think you can safely expect to see 50. But my prediction a couple of months ago is the same as it is today: 54. Yesterday, I went through the drivers that have yet to enter, and it's easily another 15-25.
-Don't forget that next Wednesday the 2-day pass online promotion will end. The advance pass will save $10, and it is a great bargain for a 2-day race with a $75,000 total purse.
-In addition to the topless modifieds (typically there are 40-50), the popular winged 600's will be racing for $1,000/win as well as limited modifieds - also running topless.
But again, the sprint feature will be run before the modifieds on Saturday.

Here are the new official pre-entries in the sprint cars, as of Friday afternoon:
Mike Peters (KS), Michael Brown (TX), Aaron Reutzel (TX), JP Bailey (OK), Charlie Brown (TX), Brad Welborn (TX), John Ricketts (TX) and Terry Monroe (LA) have also entered.
We're right at 40 presently, and still on track for a solid 50+ car sprint field.
And looking at the current weather forecast: all systems are GO for the Cowtown Sprint Nationals, with high's in the 80's with 10-20% chance precip each day.
Reminders:
-The last day to save $10 on race tickets is Wednesday, Oct 8.
-Don't miss Fan Fest from 3:30-4:45pm on Saturday before the race.

I'm guessing updates will start coming in after 8pm CST tonight, and please take a moment to look through their website while you're there. Thanks!
