Tulare Thunderbowl hosts Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws on February 22 & 23
By Gary Thomas
Tulare, CA - February 17, 2008...The Tulare Thunderbowl Raceway will roar back to life this coming weekend on February 22 & 23 when the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series takes to the 1/3 mile clay oval for the first time in 2008. The two-night event will be the first of a pair of visits by the nations’ premier winged sprint car series to the Tulare County Fairground track this season.
Topping the entry list will be two-time and defending Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaw champion Donny Schatz of Fargo, ND, who captured the WOO sanctioned Dave Helm Memorial last October at Thunderbowl Raceway. This season Schatz is driving for Tony Stewart Racing under the sponsorship of Armor All as he tries to become just the second driver to win three consecutive titles in the 30 year history of the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaw Sprint Car Series. Schatz comes into the event at the Thunderbowl sitting third in points, 23 digits out of the lead.
Last season Schatz had one of the finest years in the history of sprint car racing as he picked up 19 WOO wins, including big victories in some of the sport’s premier events such as the Knoxville Nationals, the Kings Royal, the Williams Grove National Open and the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup. The only major victory Schatz missed out on was the Gold Cup Race of Champions in Chico where he finished in the fifth spot after starting 16th. Schatz was also victorious at the Thunderbowl during a prelim main event in October of 2005 and has finished on the podium in five of the nine WOO main events contested at the Central Valley track.
The only driver that could seemingly keep pace with Schatz last season was Brownsburg, Indiana’s Joey Saldana who finished second in WOO points with 13 overall victories. Saldana is back for a third straight season behind the wheel of the Kasey Kahne Racing No. 9 machine as he looks to take home his first Outlaw driving title in the Budweiser sponsored JEI. In 2007 Saldana picked up his first career Gold Cup Race of Champions victory at Silver Dollar Speedway in September, and put up a great fight for the championship much of the season before Schatz pulled away near the end of the year. After the WOO season ended he made a stop at the 14th annual Trophy Cup in Tulare where he won the prelim main event on opening night and finished second in the overall weekend points.
The World of Outlaw Sprint Series made their first visit to the Tulare Thunderbowl Raceway in September of 2003 and that event was won by 20-time Outlaw champion Steve Kinser of Bloomington, Indiana. The sprint car icon is coming off a tough year by his standards and this season he is looking to get back up on the high perch he has held for so many years. His ‘07 year saw 10 victories and a finish of sixth place in the final standings, a great year for many drivers, but the level of consistency that everyone expects from Steve Kinser wasn’t what had been seen for so many years. He showed however, that he isn’t going to lay over as he won the season finale at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, which was televised live by SPEED and has a new fire lit underneath him for ‘08 as he competes in the familiar Q Oil’s No. 11.
At the end of last season Clovis, CA’s Jason Meyers was the hottest sprint car driver on the planet and he looks to continue the success in ‘08. The driver of the GLR Investments No. 14 won five main events with WOO last year en route to a tie for fourth in the final standings. He also captured a number of big victories during the final month of the season with various sanctioning bodies. In November at Thunderbowl Raceway Meyers won the Trophy Cup for the first time in his career worth $15,000 and also picked up $20,000 at the Short Track Nationals in Arkansas. Meyers had a strong week in Florida a couple weeks ago and comes into Tulare sitting second in the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaw Sprint Car point standings, just 10 points out of the lead.
San Jose’s Tim Kaeding had a pair of podium finishes during the three World of Outlaw Sprint Series events at the Thunderbowl last season and will look to continue the success during the upcoming February event behind the wheel of the Tom Rolfe Trucking No. 10. “TK” won the second night of the February two-day event last season, finished third at the Dave Helm Memorial in October and also won a Golden State Challenge Series main event at the Thunderbowl in June. Overall in ’07 Kaeding totaled six wins in seven GSC starts and also won Silver Dollar Speedway’s Fall Nationals in October with a charge from the 14th starting position. He comes into Tulare sitting seventh in the current World of Outlaw point standings following three top 10 finishes in Florida.
Dover, Missouri’s Danny Lasoski finished third in WOO points last year with six wins, including a two-night sweep of the Harvest Classic at Calistoga Speedway. The former Outlaw champ has struggled in his career at Thunderbowl Raceway however and has just one win at the track, which came during the Northern Auto Racing Club sanctioned Turkey Night in 2001. "The Dude" is expected to make his '08 debut for long time car owner Guy Forbrook in Tulare, as the pair reunite to chase the WOO crown. Lasoski won the most recent event in WOO competition when he captured victory aboard his own No. 5 JEI sprinter at Volusia.
Owasso, Oklahoma’s Daryn Pittman had one of the finest years of his World of Outlaw career last season scoring six wins and finishing in a tie with Meyers for fourth in points. The pilot of the Titan Garages & Carports No. 21 has become one of the top drivers in the country over the last handful of seasons. Elk River, Minnesota’s Craig Dollanksy has teamed up with car owner Larry Woodward for the ‘08 season and will look to improve on his seventh place finish in points from a year ago. The driver known as the “Crowd Pleaser” was very strong in Florida and currently leads the World of Outlaw point standings in the Auto Value Parts Stores sponsored No. 2 machine.
Local car owner Dennis Roth will field a car for Bixby, OK’s Shane Stewart at the event. Stewart had an outstanding ’07 season driving the Doyle’s Harley Davidson No. 1 machine as he scored a number of victories, including the Knoxville 360 Nationals, the Fred Brownfield Memorial Challenge, the Skagit 360 Nationals, and also had a win in WOO competition at Elma. This season he is wheeling the potent Roth Motorsports No. 83 on the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaw Sprint tour in his second full time stint with the series. Stewart needs to make up points at the Thunderbowl following a tough outing in Florida that left him 26th in the standings.
Bloomington, Indiana’s Kraig Kinser will make his Thunderbowl Raceway return aboard the Bass Pro Shops, Tony Stewart Racing No. 20. The former Knoxville Nationals champ is competing in his first full WOO schedule since 2005, following a couple years in the NASCAR ranks where he ran in a number of races with the Craftsman Truck Series. K. Kinser last competed at the Thunderbowl in October of 2005 where he brought home a fourth place finish in the final night of the two-day program.
Other Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaw drivers expected to compete on February 22 & 23 will be past Thunderbowl WOO winners Tim Shaffer of Aliquipa, PA & Terry McCarl of Altoona, Iowa; as well as Wooster, Ohio’s Jac Haudenschild; St. Mary’s NSW, Aust’s Kerry Madsen; Findlay, Ohio’s Chad Kemenah; Bartlett, Tenn’s Jason Sides; Mechanicsburg, PA’s Lucas Wolfe; San Jose, CA’s Randy Hannagan and more.
Chico’s Jonathan Allard won the most 410 winged sprint car races on the West Coast last season and will be another strong local for the California contingent. Allard won a prelim main event with WOO at the Gold Cup Race of Champions in September of last year and finished second to Brandon Wimmer at the Dirt Cup in Washington. The driver of the Morrie Williams owned No. 0 also finished fourth in the final Golden State Challenge Series points, tallying four wins along the way, including a runner-up at the Thunderbowl in June. Other possible local entrants expected to compete will be Los Angeles driver Tyler Walker, Sacramento’s Willie Croft, Elk Grove’s Kyle Hirst, Scotts Valley’s Evan Suggs and more.
The front gate will open at 4 pm each night and racing is expected to get under way around 7. On Friday night tickets will be $35 for bleachers and $40 for grandstands. On Saturday they will be $40 for bleachers and $45 for grandstands. All seating is reserved during the weekend. For tickets call (559) 688-0909 and to view a seating chart, a list of hotels and directions log onto http://www.thunderbowlraceway.com
On Saturday from 2 pm to 6pm the band that played during the spaghetti feed at the recent Trophy Cup, Dave Laswell & the Rounders, will be playing outside close to the grandstands. The plan is to have the band play from 2 to 4, before sweeping the grandstand area and after that, fans will be allowed back into the grandstands and the band will play to just about the time hot laps get underway. Please come hang out, enjoy the music and have a good time as we kick off the Northern California sprint car season.
The Tulare Thunderbowl Raceway is located on the Tulare County Fairgrounds at the corner of Bardsley and K Streets in Tulare, California.

Tuesdays with TMAC – Thunderstruck!
(Bill W) February 19, 2008 – After a weekend off as the results of a rainout, sprint car driver, Terry McCarl will set his sights on the familiar Thunderbowl Raceway in Northern California. The 1/3 mile high-banked bullring on the Tulare Fairgrounds will play host to the World of Outlaws this weekend, and TMAC should have some confidence heading in based on his past performances there. The two-day show will be this Friday and Saturday night.
In seven career WoO feature events, TMAC has one win (2004), four top five finishes, and five top ten tallies at Tulare. One year ago, he scored a fifth place finish in the prelim and he was second in the finale. "It's funny, because I don't look at Tulare as one of my favorite tracks, but actually we've done pretty well there the last three or four years," he says. "This time last year, we were able to pass Tim Kaeding in one of the races, and everyone knows he is one of the best at Tulare. That was big for us."
When the track gets right, the Thunderbowl can lend to some great racing action. "I like Tulare, mainly because it's a racy joint," says the Altoona, Iowa native. "The problem with the tracks in California, is they can get too wet like it was last fall there, and you are follow-the-leader sometimes. When it slicks off though, it gets really racy."
The night he won in 2004, TMAC started deep in the field, but managed to use the track and the right selection of a right rear tire to his advantage. After picking his way forward, leader Daryn Pittman was slowed by a blown right rear coming for the checkers. TMAC pounced on the opportunity. "I've watched video of that several times and people always bring up the tire thing," he says. "We started 17th in that race, and only passed five cars because of the tires, the other twelve we were good enough to get by. The main one, of course, was Daryn, and I still like to remind him of that once in awhile. We were smart enough to put a hard tire on, when others weren't. Also, we had a great racecar. The rubber was on the bottom, but we had it working well around the middle."
After a lackluster qualifying effort, and starting back in row nine, TMAC wasn't asking for much that night. "I remember praying before the race for a top ten," he says. "Then, I got up to tenth and I was thinking, 'A top five would be pretty good'! Then we kept moving up and I realized, 'We could win this thing!' It was a crazy race, and we were fortunate that Daryn had that problem. Daryn's year in 2004 was one where not much went his way."
The veteran WoO competitors have become good friends, and now share a merchandise trailer. They have invested in a much bigger trailer to sell their wares on the road this season. "We won't bring it out West with the way the fuel prices are right now, but we'll be at most of the races," says McCarl. "Daryn and (wife) Mandy are pulling it with their motor home right now, and it's more cost effective for Daryn to fly out West this time."
Fans of the pair can look forward to great things this season. "We've got some great promotional items in store for the fans throughout the year," says TMAC. "We have a bigger trailer, which can carry more stuff. That gives us a lot more options and display area than we had before. Lori (Terry's wife) and Mandy are coming up with some great ideas, so stay tuned."
The trip to Tulare brings TMAC back to a place that he made home in the early 1990's. "It's nice to go there because we have so many friends out there from when we were living and racing there," he says. "The Pace Brothers from Indiana will be there, 'Cowboy' Craig Smith who I used to race with, and just a bunch of good friends will be around. For me, it's kind of like 'Old Home Week' looking back at our San Jose days."
While some racetracks that TMAC frequented in the Golden State have gone the way of the bulldozer, the Thunderbowl has prospered. "It's a neat facility right in the heart of town on the interstate," says the veteran. "That's unique in California…unfortunately, racetracks are getting pretty rare out there. There is no lack of great sprint car fans though! They have an awesome sound system for our shows out there, and I know they have a live band coming in to perform before the races. That makes it a great 'event'!" TMAC hopes to be a big part of that show this weekend!

Richard from Rock Port, MO asks: With races occurring all over the country with the World of Outlaws, sometimes in a matter of days, that has to strain the crew. What about the drivers? How many of them fly to races, and how many drive?
TMAC Answers: I just finished driving from Florida to Louisiana, and from Louisiana out West, so if I could fly home, that would be great! We've got to cut costs wherever we can. I don't fly back as much as most of the drivers do to be honest. I think the bulk of them fly home quite a bit. We all have such great crews. They are people you can trust to get stuff taken care of when you're gone. Once the season gets cooking toward summer, there's really not much time to go home, so that's not an option. The spring and fall races are the times you can get home once in awhile.

Today in TMAC History!
February 19 marks the 20th Anniversary of TMAC running at the historic Ascot Park Speedway in Gardena, California. The year was 1988 and the race was a World of Outlaws preliminary feature. Jack Hewitt won the show in Darryl Saucier and Ron Pack's #4a. He was followed by Steve Kinser, Sammy Swindell, Mark Kinser in the Reid #6r and Bobby Allen.
Despite suffering a 22nd place DNF in his father's #7x, TMAC remembers Ascot well. "I remember that as about a week before Baylands where Hewitt and I got in the fistfight in his book (Hewitt's Law co-authored by Dave Argabright). We've been buddies ever since! I remember Ascot as a place I was just starting to figure out as it was closing. It was an awesome location, and a really great non-wing track. They tried to emulate it with the way they built Perris. It was a bit of a paperclip that forced you to pitch it sideways without the wing. The very last WoO show there (1990), we were running in the top ten and broke a rocker arm. That was rough."

Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Preview: Thunderbowl Raceway
Tulare, CA— February 19, 2008 By: Tony Veneziano , World of Outlaws PR Director
TULARE, Calif. -- The Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series is set for two full nights of racing on Friday, February 22 and Saturday, February 23 at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, California. The high-banked 1/3-mile has hosted the series nine times dating back to 2003, including three events last season. Another three dates are on the calendar for the 2008 campaign.
After a rainout last weekend, this will be the fourth event of the nine-plus month tour that will take the series from coast-to-coast and up to Canada twice. Craig Dollansky leads the championship standings, after earning three Top-Five finishes during the 37th Annual Alltel DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park in Florida to open the season. Jason Meyers, who hails from Clovis, California, just 30 miles from Thunderbowl Raceway, also earned three Top-Five finishes and is just 10 markers behind. Both drivers will be seeking their first win with the series at the high-banked 1/3-mile.
A strong field is expected for the first sprint car event of the Northern California season, with 20 drivers currently following the World of Outlaws full-time. Also in action will be Tim Kaeding, who won at the track last season and is currently seventh in World of Outlaws points. Also in action will be 20-time World of Outlaws champion Steve Kinser, two-time defending series titlist Donny Schatz and 2001 champ Danny Lasoski, among others.
2007 Event Recap(s):
In the first of three races for the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series at the high-banked 1/3-mile last season, Joey Saldana chased down pole sitter Jac Haudenschild in the second half of the race to pick up the $10,000 win on February 23.
Saldana charged around Haudenschild on the bottom of the front straight-a-way on the 24th lap to earn the 23rd A-Feature win of his career.
Saldana lined up on the outside of the front row for the 35-lap contest and lost a spot early, before powering his way around Tim Shaffer on the 11th lap, before setting his sights on Haudenschild for the next 13 circuits.
Late in the race, Saldana endured some very heavy lapped traffic and had a couple of close calls, as the slower machines forced him to change lines and take evasive measures. After a late restart, he pulled away and had nearly a quarter of a lap lead on Haudenschild when the checkered flag flew. Shaffer wound up third, hometown favorite Jason Meyers was fourth and former Thunderbowl winner Terry McCarl was fifth.
The following night, Tim Kaeding scored one of the most emotional wins of his career, as he dominated the event from start to finish, driving a team car for Steve Kinser Racing.
Kaeding dedicated the win to his grandmother who passed away earlier in the week. He began the night along with his brother Bud by turning a tribute lap for their grandmother. He capped the night off by pulling a wheelie down the front straight-a-way after the checkered flag and then turning donuts for the enthusiastic crowd that was on hand.
Kaeding took the lead on the opening lap when pole sitter Jason Meyers jumped the cushion exiting the first turn. From there, the native of San Jose opened up some very sizeable advantages, while enduring a couple of cautions and a red flag period with nine laps remaining.
With the laps winding down, Terry McCarl made a valiant charge at Kaeding. He closed to within a couple car lengths in heavy traffic with less than 10 laps remaining. After starting in the 11th spot, the native of Altoona, Iowa burst into the Top-Five within the first 12 laps of the event. Donny Schatz finished third, with Justin Henderson fourth and Jason Meyers fifth.
The Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series wrapped up their trio of visits to Thunderbowl Raceway last season with the inaugural Dave Helm Memorial on October 13. The event honored the long time car owner who passed away in February of 2007, and called Selma, California home, which is a half-hour from Tulare.
Donny Schatz continued a late season tear as he picked up his third consecutive victory, which helped him cement his second consecutive series title.
The North Dakota native started on the pole and jumped to an early lead, battling a rough race track and an early charge from California native Ronnie Day and a late charge from Jason Sides and Tim Kaeding. Schatz used a strong restart after a caution with two laps to go, to claim the $10,000 top prize for his series leading 19th A-Feature win of the season and the 70th of his World of Outlaws career, which put him in a tie with Dave Blaney for sixth on the all-time win list.
Early in the race, Schatz maintained a slight lead over Day, who closed the gap on the seventh lap as the pair entered heavy lapped traffic. While Schatz was running the high side of the track in traffic, Day looked low a couple of times exiting the third and fourth turns, but did not have enough momentum to make the pass. The caution flew on the eighth lap, giving the leaders a clear race track ahead of them.
On the ensuring restart, Schatz jumped to a four car length lead as the pair entered the first and second turns. At this time, Jason Sides began to close on Day and worked on the veteran driver, slipping around him on the 19th lap to move into the runner-up spot.
Sides quickly began to close in on Schatz in lapped traffic, with Day and Tim Kaeding right behind him. With less than 10 laps to go, the Top-Five were all under a blanket. Kaeding got around Day on the 24th lap to move into third, before the caution flew two laps later.
Schatz used a strong restart to pull away from Sides and Kaeding, when the caution flew with two laps to go. Again Schatz used a strong restart to jump to a comfortable lead, while Kaeding tried one last time to get around Sides, with the latter holding on for the second position. Day came home fourth with Kerry Madsen in fifth.
