A few minutes with........

Brett Scott Jr. is xxxxxxxx years old and lives in Puyallup, WA. This kid believes he can do anything, and truth be known - he can. I can describe him as a bold child, who knows exactly what he wants from life, and yet he knows the boundaries. You can’t help but smile when you watch or talk with him. He’s perfectly comfortable talking with adults, older kids, and even younger kids. When he speaks, the confidence he exudes in himself is obvious. He is one of my favorite kids to watch and interact with, because we each have an understanding of what the other expects - honesty and respect. It’s a story that shall remain between him and myself - until such time he wishes to share it. It’s a story his parents and I will never forget, and one in which changed his life in a single moment.

Brett Scott Jr. likes to give one word answers, and responds instantly to any question about racing - but puts considerable time and thought into answering any questions that are removed from racing - like his favorite dinner, movie, etc. I suspect those are things that he could well do without - food is food. But racing - that’s different for Brett Jr. He’s a gear head through and through. I suspect he’ll have grease under his fingernails at his Senior Prom.

Here are his thoughts - enjoy.

CA: Hey Little Brett - what’s up?

Brett Jr.: What’s up? (This has been our signature greeting since day one)

CA: You’re not so little anymore huh? So we haven’t talked much lately - what have you been up to.

Brett Jr.: Ya. Racing.

CA: Let me ask this straight up. You left ¼ midgets at 11 years old. Why?

Brett Jr.: We bought a 600. I was kinda bored with the ¼ midget and we bought the 600 and it went way faster.

CA: But you really haven’t left ¼ midgets - right? I mean, because I still catch you hanging out in the ceremonies and stuff even though you’re not a member.

Brett Jr.: Well I haven’t ran a ¼ midget since the winter of 2005. I hang out with the people I know who still run ¼ midgets and stuff.

CA: OK, so I saw some Deming results where you finished right behind the Iceman - Tom Waggner. What’s that like.

Brett Jr.: It’s fun. It’s the only way I can explain it.

CA: You just finished running Clay Cup. How did that go?

Brett Jr.: 12th place. I was running 8th and broke a left rear rod. 12th out of 36 I would say is good.

CA: What’s the ultimate goal for you in racing?

Brett Jr.: Make it as high in the ranks as I can. Hopefully one day I’ll be running NASCAR.

CA: Who’s a bigger race freak - your mom or your dad?

Brett Jr.: My dad.

CA: You remember that trip to Terre Haute we took with the side trip to the Knoxville Nationals? Do you remember where we stayed and who you met?

Brett Jr.: Travis Crams house and we met Peter Murphy.

CA: Did your dad ever find out about your moms crush on Peter Murphy?

Brett Jr.: Pretty much. She freaked out when she heard Peter Murphy was at Dirt Cup this year. My dad doesn’t really care. He just says “whatever”.

CA: So lets talk about the trip home and when we reached the top of 4th of July pass. You remember that?

Brett Jr.: No, not really. (I did some reminding because Brett was pretty young)

CA: Are you still holding up your end of our agreement?

Brett Jr.: Ya.

CA: Hey, by the way, I don’t think I ever apologized to you for the part I played in your little brother AJ knocking your glasses off in Topeka. Sorry about that. One question though - have you ever thought about it and laughed?

Brett Jr.: (laughing before I finished the question) Ya.

CA: Alright - quick questions. Favorite thing to eat for dinner?

Brett Jr.: My mom makes great steaks.

CA: Favorite movie?

Brett Jr.: Badder Santa

CA: Favorite thing to do after a race?

Brett Jr.: See if friends can come home with me.

CA: Favorite subject in school?

Brett Jr.: Math.

CA: Are you still loading trucks at the bark lot?

Brett Jr.: Well, I don’t load trucks, but I had bags in the bucket and I was backing up and I ran into a truck. I load the bags and screen bark.

CA: So, Jr High School next year. Girls getting prettier. What’s your thoughts?

Brett Jr.: (Laughing) That’s funny. I’m not sure.

CA: Do you remember at Topeka when you were upset about not making the A-main, and you thought your dad should have done a better job setting up the car? Has your opinion changed?

Brett Jr.: Ya. I think that the car was perfect and I was just still learning how to drive it.

CA: I’ve always said I think you have got the biggest heart of any racer I know. I used to call you Superman. Is that passion for racing still in there, or have you changed your focus a little bit?

Brett Jr.: No, it hasn’t changed - I wanna keep racing.

CA: Describe your favorite memory of ¼ midgets.

Brett Jr.: Winning the Grands in 2002 in Jr Honda.

CA: OK, Last question. This is just between you and me - OK? At the 2006 Dirt Grands when you participated in the opening ceremonies - you knew you were not a member - huh?

Brett Jr.: Ya. (laughing)

It doesn’t matter anyway Little Brett. The smile I saw on your face is a memory I will always have and be able to look back and smile about. You were having fun with all of your friends, which is exactly what the sport of ¼ midgets is supposed to be about. You’re one of my all time favorites, and I’m glad we had the chance to make some memories together.

Thank you my little friend, that was fun. Good luck in your future endeavors!

CA:)

The glasses getting knocked off must've happened after I drove Little Brett back to his hotel to get his glasses.  His mom was in a panic because Little Brett forgot his glasses back at their hotel and he was due to race soon and she was working the scales and couldn't leave. She asked me to take Brett back to the hotel to get them. Brett and I jumped in Joe Hickle's old Volkswagen diesel pickup and drove to the hotel halfway across Topeka.

Now, I can drive a manual transmission ok, but here I am driving through Topeka with an 8 yr old giving me directions and every time we had to stop at a light I had to keep my foot on the gas while the clutch was in or the engine would die!

It was 100 degrees and 100% humidity, I didn't know where I was going.  And I remember Joe arriving in Topeka bragging the he drove all the way from Quilcene to Topeka and only spent $50 in gas!  That thing was a piece of crap :P LOL.  But hey, whatever we gotta do to get the kids racing!

UPDATE:  Brett Jr's mom sent me his QMA card confirming that Brett Jr was indeed a QMA member in 2006 - and they don't live in Quilcene.;)

The good news is that it further illustrates the meaning of the smile Little Brett had on his face by being with his friends at a 1/4 midget track even though he wasn't racing.

And now I have documentation of his age.  DOH!  ;)

Keep 'em kids for as long as you can.  They have lots of time to be an adult, and so little to be a child.  Thanks Lisa - I'm glad you enjoyed the read.:)
