Races Bring Exciting Results
By Ben Deatherage
Last Saturday night at the Cottage Grove Speedway action filled the evening in all five classes. Seven Feathers Hotel and Casino Night at the races seemed to get off to a bad start as rain occurred in the early hours of Saturday but went away as the night went on. Also as the night went on it seemed that Bob Leach worked his magic again as he always has seemed to be doing this year and prepped another great track.
All-American Street Stocks:
For the first class of the evening the All-American Street Stocks Kolby Clay of Junction City was the fast timer of the night at 16.12 seconds. In the Ray’s Food Place Trophy Dash Ross Denton of Yoncalla was able to hold off a hard charging field to pick up the win. In the heat race Robert Wulbrandt of Springfield dominated by getting a good jump on Denton. Wulbrandt would go on to win the race and draw a blue chip and have to start in the back of the field.
In the main event Kolby Clay and T.J. Hardy of Dexter battled on the get go but Robert Wulbrandt came to a halt in turn two and lined them back up double file. Hardy and Clay battled hard until Clay made the pass and moved forward. With the exception of the early race yellow no cautions occurred and Kolby Clay was able to grab his first victory of the season. Ross Denton finished in second, followed by Gene Ashley of Jasper, T.J. Langan of Jasper, and April Howard of Eugene.
Limited Sprints:
In the Limited Sprints Brandi Bounds of Cottage Grove was the fastest car in qualifying and was able to turn a 11.675. In the Ray’s Food Place Trophy Dash Ron Cooper of Cottage Grove pulled away from the rest of the field and was able to finish on top for the first time of the season. His success carried on into the heat race and Cooper was able to win the heat but would draw a blue chip and had to start in row four.
In the main fast timer Brandi Bounds gained the initial race lead and pulled away. It was a caution free race until lap twenty when Ron Cooper got into the turn three and four walls to bring out the yellow. It was the only opportunity to be challenged but Bounds took off again and was able to win her fifth win of the season. Nate Morelock of Cottage Grove finished in second followed by Heath Shelton of Drain, Ozzie Osburn of Springfield, and Steven Horner of Cottage Grove.
Late Models:
In the Late Models Kelly McDonald of Cottage Grove posted fast time of the night at 13.716seconds. Don Muth Sr. of Cottage Grove won the Ray’s Food Place Trophy Dash on a last lap pass by Craig Hanson of Albany. In heat one Kreg Britton of Cottage Grove was able to win the heat race and transfer in the second heat. In heat two it was Muth finishing on top despite a handful of cautions and drew a blue chip and had to start from row three outside for the main.
In the main Kreg Britton took the early lead after starting on the pole until Craig Hanson took over and lead a number of laps. Then a good battle for the lead occurred between Don Muth Sr. and Hanson both jockeying for positions. As it came down to it Hanson was able to secure the lead in lapped traffic and go on to win his second main of the year. Muth finished in second followed by Tom Tesch of Brooks, Kelly McDonald, and Jake Mayden of Cheshire.
360 Sprints:
The 360 Sprints had their first race since mid-May and for some drivers since Memorial Day weekend in Elma, Washington. Fast time of the night went to Chad Noland of Central Point with a time of 11.507 seconds. Marvin Smith of Cottage Grove dominated the Ray’s Food Place Trophy Dash and was able to finish on top. In the first heat Charlie Cash of Medford was able to pick up the win after a pass for the lead and would be able to move into heat two. Heat two seen Marvin Smith continue his winning style and picked up the heat win. Unlike the classes before him Smith had the luck of drawing a white chip to start on the pole.
In the main Brendan Boyce of Cottage Grove and Marvin Smith battled hard amongst one another and the race showed no sign of a clear leader. Disaster almost struck Boyce in lapped traffic as Hedge Carter of Cottage Grove spun in front of him but since Boyce kept his car going he was able to retain a top five position. As laps winded down Boyce retook the lead and was able to use a lapped car as a pick and lead his car to Seven Feathers Casino Victory Lane for the first time of the season and the second time of his career. Smith finished in second followed by Kyle Mille of Eugene, Todd Zeitler of Medford, and Shane Forté of Junction City.
Modifieds:
In the final class of the night Aaron Sheelar of Springfield picked up fast time in the Modifieds at 14.281 seconds. Robert Hand of Cottage Grove was able to beat the competition in the Ray’s Food Place Trophy Dash to pick up the win. In the first heat race Brett Muth of Cottage Grove was able to beat younger brother Don Jr. to move into heat two. In the second heat Braden Hand of Cottage Grove was able to pick up the win. And in a recurring theme a blue chip was drawn and Braden Hand would have to start in the fourth row.
For the main Brett Muth led a good portion of the way until the like of Craig Hanson and Don Muth Jr. caught up with him. Muth Jr. made the pass and led the field around until around two to go when fast timer Aaron Sheelar made the pass in lapped traffic for good to take the lead and the win. Muth Jr. finished in second followed by Hanson, Braden Hand, and Gus Cooper of Creswell.
Well that does it for this week’s coverage be sure and make it out for South Lane Family Relief Nursery Night at the races featuring Limited Sprints, Modifieds, Late Models, All-American Street Stocks, and Micro Sprints.
