Season Opener Sees Success

By Ben Deatherage

It was a successful beginning for the 2008 season opener presented by Nickel Ads Classifieds for the Cottage Grove Speedway.  A great car count and a great turn out of fans showed that despite the cold weather at night people were eager to see racing at their local racetrack.  It was the earliest start of the season in recent years and proved to actually have some warm temperatures in the day.

All American Street Stocks:

Tom Langan of Jasper found himself driving the familiar black and red #74 while son T.J. enjoyed the prom.  Langan found success early with setting fast time at 16.30 seconds.  Langan got off to good start in the with a good lead until the yellow flew again on lap three for Yoncalla’s Ross Denton coming to a halt in the pit entrance.

For the main Langan showed dominance early until defending champ Robert Wulbrandt of Springfield got around Colby Clay of Junction City for second.  Once Clay was passed Wulbrandt fully concentrated on Langan and began running him down.  Running him down is what he did and on the last corner of the last lap Wulbrandt got a good enough run to edge Langan on the front stretch.  Clay ended up third followed by Jeff Casto of Cottage Grove, and Denton.

Modifieds:

One of the most talented modified drivers you’ll see found the evening to be quite simple when it came to racing last Saturday night.  Coburg’s Jesse Williamson found himself setting fast time at 13.563 the best of the field.  In heat one Robert Hand and Brett Muth both from Cottage Grove battled hard for the one and only transfer spot to the next heat.  Muth was able to get the win and move on after a hard charging Hand finished right behind him.  In heat two it was green to checkered with Williamson pacing the field and not looking back.

For the main Williamson got out in front and seen no worries after that.  The only incident is when Brett Muth came to a halt in turn four on lap thirteen brining the only caution for the main out.  Williamson was able to work all the way up to the eighth place car and put a lap down and didn’t let the slower cars slow him down.  Monte Bischoff of Medford finished in second after a hard fought battle with defending champion Gus Cooper of Springfield, Braden Hand of Cottage Grove finished in fourth followed by Albany’s Craig Hanson.

Limited Sprints:

Springfield’s Monty Smith showed he was going to be a car to beat while setting fast time for the evening at 11.906 seconds.  But in the heat race Cottage Grove’s Brandi Bounds led the caution free heat race late in the race to get the pole position.

Bounds carried that success to main dominating early.  It wasn’t until lap fourteen when Cottage Grove’s Travis Cooley stopped in turn two and the next lap Cottage Grove’s Steven Horner get into the backstretch wall did the cars start to drive really harder.  In fact Smith took over the lead briefly on lap twenty but Bounds charged forward and separated herself from Smith and win on to win the main.  Smith finished second followed by Ted Baker of Cottage Grove third, Portland’s Ryan Martinez fourth, and Heath Shelton of Drain fifth.

Late Models:

Plenty of Late Models were on hand Saturday night as several drivers came from other tracks (Cottage Grove is the first Oregon track to officially begin their season) and the Warriors on Dirt Pacific Coast Fast Trak Crate Late Model Series on hand.  Don Muth Sr. of Cottage Grove making the transition from Modifieds after a successful number of seasons found himself as the fast timer at 13.495.  In the first heat Todd Sieg of Lebanon got hard into the first turn wall on lap two and it took some time to clean up the mess.  Paul Culp of Springfield won the shortened first heat and moved on to heat two.

In the second heat everything was clean racing until to back-to-back cautions occurred but Salem’s Tanner Ferrando had no problem picking up the victory.  In the final heat a good get together occurred on the first lap with Jason Wines of Lebanon, Joey Tanner of Portland, Scott Puncochar of Hillsboro, and Eugene’s Greg Schellhorn getting together in turn four.  Once racing actually got underway Portland’s Greg Walters found himself on top and earning a spot to start on the pole.

For the B Main no cautions occurred and three lucky drivers transferred out and into the A (by order of finish): Lyn McDonald of Sweet Home, Culp, and Lisa Stroup from Redmond.  For the A Muth and Walters battled hard in and out of lapped traffic.  With five cautions occurring every five or more laps it really made it a series of dashes but still made the racing exciting.  Muth proved that he wasn’t done yet when he nearly got side by side with Walter out of the last corner but Walters went by first.  Ferrando managed to finish the night in third, Wines fourth, and Puncochar in fifth.

360 Sprints:

For the final class it was great to see drivers making the trip down Northern Washington.  Medford’s Roger Crockett entertained fans with a good lap for fast time at 11.258 seconds.  Heat one seen three red flag situations and came to an early end with Quilcie, WA’s J.J. Hickle declared the winner.  In heat two Crockett showed no signs of slowing down and easily took the victory.

For the main Crockett got a great jump on Jayme Barnes of Everett, WA until Kyle Miller of Eugene spun in turns one and two.  On the complete restart Barnes took advantage of the high line and pulled away quite a bit from the rest of the field.  Getting through most of lap traffic Barnes hooked the inside burn in turn four.  Although he kept going it seemed his momentum had went away a little bit and was just enough for Crockett to get close.  Crockett made his move in lapped traffic on lap twenty-six and didn’t look back and brought home a big win.  Barnes finished in second while Jared Ridge from Snohomish, WA was the last car on the lead lap to finish.  Hickle finished in fourth followed by Tacoma, WA’s Mitch Olson.

Well race fans that does it for this edition be sure and come out and see the Limited Sprints, Modifieds, Late Models, and All American Street Stocks in action on this Saturday.  Also running will be Micro Sprints a great opportunity for young up and comers to see on the ¼ mile.  Tickets prices as follows:

Adults are  $12.00, Seniors  $10.00, Children  $5.00 (6-11), and Children 5 & under (always free). So bring down the family and be sure to dress warm and enjoy a great night of racing for Meyer Media Night. Until then I’ll see you at the races.

It was a great show, a B-main for the late models, been a long time since I seen that. As far as car count  I think they had around 23 late models, 17 or 18 360 sprints, sportsman sprints seemed down a bit, maybe 10 of them, maybe 7 street stocks. How did the B-main go there last night, lol!!

for some reason they never give them for the street stocks. i thought about racing there this year ,but the lack of giving full results for the streetstocks and the ridiculous tire rule for a purseless class has me heading  farther south to DCS this year with a few willamette races  up north tossed in as i can run the same 25 buck tire  at both tracks. i missed the streetstock main so i couldnt tell you how many cars ran but would like to know also
