Two New Faces And Three Repeaters In Victory Lane
By Ben Deatherage
Last Saturday night seen two new winners for the first time this year and three for a repeat victory.  Budget Lumber of Roseburg Night at the races proved to be a good despite the looming clouds and threatening rain.  The rain proved to hold of until a half an hour after the final race perfect timing.

All-American Street Stock:
For the first class of the night T.J. Langan of Jasper was the fastest of the eight qualifiers.  Langan’s 16.59 was one of only two drivers to get into the sixteen second bracket.  Kolby Clay of Junction City was the other driver at 16.68 seconds and second fast.

For the Ray’s Food Place Trophy Dash Langan piloted his entry to victory.  For Langan he earned the starting position for the heat on the pole.

For the first heat everything got of to a good start until lap two when Kolby Clay and Ross Denton of Yoncalla got together in the last set of corners.  Also on the same caution Don Frisbie of Vancouvar, Washington got sideways in the backstretch.  Langan kept his clean sweep alive and picked up the heat race win.

After the heat victory Langan drew a blue chip and guaranteed a starting spot for him in the back of the field.  When the main event started the first lap seen on Frisbie spin before the first lap could be completed.  April Howard of Eugene took over the lead on the second attempt at the start.  Howard took off and didn’t look back.  Howard won her first race of the season by coming across the line first followed by Kolby Clay, Langan, Jeff Casto of Cottage Grove, and Ross Denton rounding up the top five.

Limited Sprints:
For the Limited Sprints Nate Morelock of Cottage Grove was the fastest of the twelve entries.  Morelock’s 11.603 was the first driver of the season either then Monte Smith of Springfield for the year.  In the Ray’s Food Place Trophy Dash the opening lap seen Ron Cooper of Cottage Grove spin in turns three and four.  On the second restart Steven Horner of Cottage Grove dominated the race to win his third straight trophy dash.

For heat one it was caution free until the white flag lap when Jake Waddell of Roseburg spun in turn four.  Ozzie Osburn of Springfield had his way with the field and the track and picked up the first heat race win.  In the second heat it was another dominating run with Nate Morelock at the point.  The caution free heat found Morelock on top after the conclusion of the final lap.  Morelock drew a blue chip and had to start in row three for the main.

Brandi Bounds of Cottage Grove started on the pole and was able to get around Ozzie Osburn for the early race lead.  Ron Cooper found himself getting sideways in turn four to bring out the yellow and Raquel Ivie of Klamath Falls spun to miss.  On the restart a good battle occurred between Osburn and Steven Horner.  Bounds found herself in a familiar situation and that was on top of the lap sheets as she was able to win her third race of the season.  Osburn finished in second followed by Horner, Ted Baker of Cottage Grove, and Cooper in fifth.

Modifieds:
In the Modifieds qualifying efforts Jesse Williamson of Coburg bested the eleven car field with the best time of the night 13.526 seconds.  For Williamson it was his second fast time of the year.  That success transferred to the Ray’s Food Place Trophy Dash and Williamson kept the sweep alive by winning the race.

In heat race one Don Muth Jr. of Cottage Grove led the first three laps when Robert Hand of Cottage Grove took the lead.  On lap five David Schmidt of Eugene spat out a driveline on the front stretch allowing second place and company to line up behind Robert Hand.

The battle within the top five intensified until lap six when Freddy Stauffer of Creswell spun in turn four but Braden Hand of Cottage Grove coming from the back (Braden Hand did not time in) was able to get by first Muth on lap seven then his father on lap nine and go on for the win.

For heat two the results were a little different with no cautions occurring throughout the race.  Jesse Williamson piloted his machine to victory and was hoping to gain his second clean sweep of the season.  Williamson drew a white chip and shared the front row with Cottage Grove’s Curtis Towns.

For the main Williamson got the early race lead intense battles occurred across the track and Curtis Towns and Gus Cooper of Creswell battled hard for second.  That battle ended on lap eight when Towns got sideways in turn four.  Racing continued until lap ten when Kenny Miller of Vancouvar, Washington spun in the fourth turn to bring the yellow out.

As Williamson continued to lead the race for second intensified between Braden Hand and Cooper as the laps went by.  Another caution came out on lap fifteen when Ray Hanke of Marcola and Bret Jobe of Blachley got together in turn three and Curtis Towns spun to miss.  On the restart Williamson continued to show his dominance and it looked like all was said and done when the second place car Braden Hand got into the lapped car Freddy Stauffer on lap twenty-eight to bring a late race yellow out.  Williamson was able to bring it home and pickup his second clean sweep of the season.  Cooper finished in second followed by Aaron Sheelar of Springfield, Robert Hand, and Kelly Williamson of Coburg.

360 Sprints:
A field of fifteen 360 Sprints were on hand for the evening’s racing and Charlie Cash of Roseburg was the fastest at 10.68 seconds.  The only other driver to reach the ten second range was Roger Crockett of Medford at 10.714.  It was Cash’s first fast time of his career at “the Grove”.  For the Ray’s Food Place Trophy Dash Shane Forté of Junction City made it two in a row for the dashes and landed the pole for heat two.

Heat race one seen Kyler Barraza of Myrtle Creek take the early race lead.  Jeremy Cooper of Creswell making his return to sprints after a seven year hiatus took a hard hit on the front stretch wall on lap four.  Barraza brought his car to victory and into the next heat race by leading every lap.

In heat two Garren Linder of Central Point got the jump of Shane Forté for the lead.  A yellow came out on lap four when Kyler Barraza got sideways in turn four.  After that Linder was able to hold off a hard charging Roger Crockett to win the heat.  Linder drew a blue chip and ensured his starting position from row three.

For the main polesitter Charlie Cash got out to the early race lead until lap four when he got sideways in turns three and four.  Roger Crockett apparently clipped the back of Cash to harm the front end enough to require a tow to the pits.  On the restart Phillip Del Rosa of Medford spun in turn two allowing Crockett more time to get back out on the track.

On the restart Kyle Miller of Eugene inherited the race lead and looked for his first 360 Sprint win.  Battles ensued between Shane Forté and Chad Noland of Central Point for second as Miller pulled away.  The yellow flag came back out as Charlie Cash got turned the wrong way on the four turn of the eleventh lap.  It would be the last caution as Forté and Miller duked it out in the final laps in lapped traffic.  As it came down to the wire it looked like Crockett was going to catch the two but Forté pulled out in front on the last lap to pick up his first 360 Sprint win of his career.  Miller finished in second followed by Crockett, Noland, and Todd Zeitler of Medford.

Late Models:
The Pacific Coast Fast Trak Late Model Series was on hand for “Battle at the Grove II” for the Open vs. Crate challenge.  Twenty-three Late Models were on hand and Don Muth Sr. of Cottage Grove outpaced them all at 13.106.  Muth looked to win his first race against the touring series.  For the Ray’s Food Place Dash Mike DeSilva of Springfield made it two dash victories in a row after dominating the field.

For the first heat race a large get together occurred in the backstretch including Kent Dollarhyde from Cornelius, Micah Burkley of Redmond, Brittney Ray of Beaverton, Craig Britton of Cottage Grove, Bob and Doug Trout both of Banks, and Tom Lawson Jr. of Veneta.  On the second restart Bob Trout was able to get out to the race lead.  Trout did not look back as he was able to pickup the heat race win.

For heat two the initial restart seen Jim Clair of Portland, Robbie Ireland of Banks, and Jimmy Schram of Vancouvar, Washington all get together in the fourth turn.  On the second attempt Terry Ferrando of Salem took the early race lead.  On lap three the yellow flew as Clair spun in turn four.  On the next lap another caution occurred as Oscar Luckman of Tigard got sideways in turn four.  Ferrando managed to keep his machine out in front the whole time and pickup the victory.

In the third and final heat Don Muth Sr. took over the race lead after getting around Mike DeSilva on the high side.  Muth cruised to a caution free heat race win.  On the pill draw Muth drew the white chip and looked to make it two main victories in a row.

On the initial start Mike DeSilva and Greg Walters of Portland battled hard amongst eachother for the first half of the race.  Walters took the lead on lap ten and extended his lead until lap eleven when Robbie Ireland was forced to go off the track and the yellow was brought out.  On the restart Walters again looked to extend his lead until another caution came out with Noel Radway of Cottage Grove, Jim Clair, Tom Lawson Jr., and Doug Trout got together in turn two.  Walters again got another good restart as a great battle for second occurred between Joey Tanner of Portland and Terry Ferrando.  The last caution of the night occurred in turn four on lap twenty with Doug Trout getting sideways.  On the restart Walters pulled away after Tanner attempted to get by him but found that Ferrando was putting a lot of pressure under him for second.  Walters won his second straight victory at “the Grove” with Ferrando finishing in second followed by Tanner, DeSilva, and Don Muth Sr.

It will be another five class event next Saturday night at the Cottage Grove Speedway featuring Late Models, Modifieds, Limited Sprints, All-American Street Stocks, and 360 Sprints.  For times and admission prices log on to cottagegrovespeedway.com for more information.  We’ll see you next week for another episode in the drama for the 2008 season.

Hey Ben,

Did Ron finish 5th  or was it Heath? My Laps has Heath in the number 5 spot and did my eyes at the track.

Poor Heath gets a top 5 and Ron gets his name in the paper.

Just Wondering?

Nice to see Charlie get his first fast time and Shane get his first win. Two nice guys that I really enjoyed working with last year in the NSCS. Hope to see them both race soon..
