FAST TIMES AT THE GROVE
By Ben Deatherage
It was another great night at the Cottage Grove Speedway on Saturday for RV Corral Night at the races with two track records falling and extremely fast lap times being posted well into the main events. The day began with overcast clouds but there was no threat of rain for a repeat of last week.
Late Models:
In the Late Models Casey Vitale of Lebanon was able to set fast time at 12.721 seconds and broke Kelly McDonald of Cottage Grove’s record of 12.725 set last year. The Ray’s Food Place Trophy Dash was won by Craig Hanson of Albany while the first heat race found Tom Tesch of Brooks moving into the second heat. In the second heat race Vitale would pick up the win and draw a blue chip and have to start from row four.
In the main event Kelly McDonald took the early lead until he went off the top of corners one and two on lap three. On the next lap Davey Evans of Portland spun in turn two to bring back out the yellow. After that the race continued to stay green as Craig Hanson dominated and lapped the field up to fifth place. Tom Tesch would finish a respectable second followed by Paul Culp of Springfield, Don Muth of Cottage Grove, and McDonald rounding up the top five.
All-American Street Stocks:
It was Ross Denton of Yoncalla setting fast time for the All-American Street Stocks at 15.82 seconds. In the Ray’s Food Place Trophy Dash Denton continued to dominate and won the race. In heat one Robert Wulbrandt of Springfield picked up the victory while heat two seen Kolby Clay of Junction City pick up the victory. Clay drew a blue chip and would have to start in the middle of the field.
For the main Robert Wulbrandt got out to the early race lead and looked to dominate the rest of the field. On lap seven Dan Frisbie of Vancouver, Washington stopped in turns one and two to bring out the one and only yellow of the main. The rest of the race seen T.J. Langan of Jasper hunt down Wulbrandt and attempt to pass Wulbrandt on the last corner of the last lap but Wulbrandt would come across the line first. Langan took second followed by Ross Denton, Kolby Clay, and Gene Ashley of Jasper.
Modifieds:
In the Modifieds it was Jesse Williamson of Coburg setting fast time at 13.311 seconds. In the Ray’s Food Place Trophy Dash Albert Gill of Medford was able to pick up the win. In heat one Curt Coggins of Medford was able to get the win while heat two seen Gus Cooper of Creswell win and draw yet another blue chip.
The main was filled with cautions and action first with Don Muth Jr. and Sr. getting together in turn four on the first lap. Then on lap two a right front flat tire halted Medford’s C.J. Putnam. Lap thirteen seen Albert Gill spin turn four while on the restart Braden Hand of Cottage Grove collected Bill Miller of Springfield while battling for second in turn four. On the next restart a four car pileup ensued in the second turn. The final caution occurred with debris falling of a car and on the front stretch on lap twenty four. During the periods in between cautions great racing ensued between some of the West Coast’s best rated drivers. Monte Bischoff of Medford held off Robert Hand of Cottage Grove on the last lap to pick up the victory while Kelly Williamson of Coburg finished in third, Greg McDonald of Cottage Grove fourth and Craig Hanson in fifth.
Limited Sprints:
Another track record fell during the night this time with Cottage Grove’s Nate Morelock at a blistering 10.855 seconds. In the Ray’s Food Place Trophy Dash Hedge Carter of Cottage Grove picked up the “W” while in the first heat Ozzie Osburn of Cottage Grove finished on top. In the final heat it was Morelock back on top of the charts with the win and drew the only white chip of the night.
In the main on the first start Jake Waddell of Roseburg got sideways in turns one and two. Morelock dominated the race and approached lap traffic but would catch a break when the yellow came out on lap fourteen when Monty Smith of Springfield spun in turn two. Another yellow would come out when Waddell spun on the front stretch on lap sixteen. Morelock would lead the field home with a dominating performance picking up his first win of the season. Hedge Carter finished in second followed by Ron Cooper of Cottage Grove, Steven Horner of Cottage Grove, and Brandi Bounds of Cottage Grove.
Well that does it for this week’s report be sure and check out Saturday’s special event at the Cottage Grove Speedway as the American Sprint Car Series-Northwest Region visit “the Grove” for the first time this year. Expect cars to travel from Washington, California, all over Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Alberta, and British Columbia. It should be good night with a lot of locals picked as favorites. Boy, that was FAST last night.
A modified turned a 12.663 in the heat race. To put that into perspective, when the track was dry 2 weeks ago fast time in the 360 sprints was 12.891.

| A question...I worked on a sprinter that ran down there when they used to run LMs all the time...I think Osborne (just to name one) had a faster time than that. Is that limited late models?? Just wonderin

| Hey Jeff you are thinking of Glenn"the Wizard" Osborn. No then were Super Stock later years called Wedge or POSSE Cars. Tube frames 6 to 10 foot high side boards. Them things were fast. But Bob Boyd had the track record for board cars. I have it some where wrote down.
