PHRA dwarf cars race out of Turn 4 at Coos Bay Speedway on the 4th of July weekend last year. COOS BAY, Ore. - The Pacific Hardtop Racing Association made its first event visit to Coos Bay Speedway a year ago for two non-points races on the 4th of July weekend, and the event was considered a rousing success. This Friday and Saturday, July 3 and 4, the PHRA dwarfs will return to Coos Bay Speedway for another two nights of action.

A year ago, Mitch Meeuwsen took the Friday night victory and Rick Adams was the big winner on Saturday night. This year the PHRA's races at Coos Bay Speedway will again be non-point affairs, but a few more cars will be on hand this weekend as the PHRA will be joined by the Southern Oregon Dwarf Car Association, who agreed to put this week's Coos Bay events on their schedule this season. PHRA and SODCA have collaborated in the past, but this will be the their first Coos Bay venture together.

PHRA has run six times this season, all points races, and all six times it has been two-time and defending club champion Corey Esteban who has found himself in the winners circle at the end of the night. Esteban ran his streak to six just this past Saturday when he won at River City Speedway in St. Helens, Ore. for the second time this year.

Unlike some of the other victories this season, Saturday's win didn't come to Esteban so easily. Meeuswen was leading the main event until crashing out, and then Esteban had to chase down Henry Corbin III and pass him late in the race to secure the victory. Esteban's other victories have come at Sunset Speedway in Banks, Oregon; Cottage Grove Speedway in Cottage Grove, Oregon and Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash.

The PHRA has had car counts of 29, 36, 35, 34, 27 and 32 this season. With some company from SODCA, about 30 dwarfs are expected for this Friday and Saturday's non-points races. They'll be joined by non-wing sprint cars and midgets and local stock car classes.

Coos Bay Speedway is a 1/4-mile dirt oval, located south of town. Heading south from the city on U.S. Hwy 101, S.R. 42 shoots off to the southeast. The track is on the right side of S.R. 42 going south, just a couple of miles from U.S. Hwy 101. The track's website is located at http://www.coosbayspeedway.us.
