MANY LEAD BUT ONLY 5 WIN AT EPHRATA RACEWAY PARK
(Ephrata, WA) 6/7/08 by Kelly Hart
On a night where 30 mile an hour winds blew across the racetrack, it was the number of lap leaders on the 5 class card that impressed race fans at Ephrata Raceway Park. Fifty-seven competitors checked in for this night of racing. In the five different main events run Saturday night, in 105 laps of main event action there were 14 different race leaders. A lot of passing means a lot of great racing on the high banked quarter mile asphalt oval.
The Kim Janke State Farm Agent Youth Hornets were paced by Jesse Hector. Hector set fast time at 17.59 seconds, and won his heat and main. Bart Hector, Jr. won the A dash and Sean Manderville won the B dash. The other heat race winner was Dylan Adamson. Jesse Hector led the final 12 laps of the main, after passing Hector, Jr. on the 8th lap. Adamson held the lead off the initial start, with Michael Olsick picking up the top spot for laps two and three. Bart Hector, Jr. held off the hard charges of Jesse Hector as they went side by side for many laps in the best part of the main event battle.
It was Josh Hector’s turn to set the pace for the Ephrata Pioneer Muffler II Adult Hornet division with fast time in qualifying at 17.43 seconds. Hector won his heat and the Main event leading the final 18 laps. His bonzai move to the outside going three wide around the lead lap really helped launch him forward and once he got the lead was almost impossible to catch. Tony Snider and Rod Julian won the trophy dashes. Snider was a double winner picking up the B heat race win.
Jeff Hector set fast time for the Ephrata Raceway Park Mini Stocks at 16.40 seconds which was the fastest lap time of all classes in qualifying. Hector also won main event. One of 3 cars to lead the race. Charles Larr was dogged by Hector for 20 laps, when he and a lapped car made contact, sending Larr to the infield and bringing out the caution, white flag and checkered flag. Hector made the right move in the clogged turn 4 congestion to slip ahead at the line for the win. Glenn Hector and Dave Macken won the trophy dashes. The heat race winners were Larr and Richard Brown in his first race of the year.
Some traveling racers from the Wenatchee area joined up with the growing Jerry’s Auto Supply Hobby Stocks to make a nice 13 car field. “Front Row” Bo Swenson set fast time in the #66 car with a 16.45 second lap. Chris Costlow started making his mark on the class with a dash and heat race win. The other dash was won by visitor Josh Mackenzie from Wenatchee. Robert Hagadorn won the A heat race. In the main event, Neil Nelson led the initial green flag lap before being overtaken by Randy Pugh. Pugh held down the top spot for 4 laps when he was passed by Russell “Grizz” Kane another of the visiting cars. Kane looked good out front but the handling on the car seemed to start going away late as the back end of the car started swinging out or becoming loose as the laps wound down. Costlow meanwhile had moved up from his 5th starting position to take advantage of the leaders handling misfortune and was able to take the lead away on the 17th lap. Costlow picked up the win with Kane holding on for second and Swenson third.
It is becoming quite evident that the BIG CARS are fan favorites. These cars range from Cadillacs to International TravelAlls and Ford Thunderbirds. The liberal rules allow for all varieties and ranges of interpretations. And the cars themselves are allowed to make contact, in fact during the main event they are encouraged to bump, bang and crash each other. The class has grown to 8 cars in 3 short weeks of racing. The third and fourth corners were wet down before the main event started and added to the mayhem. Eddie Razey drove his Cadillac to the lead for the first 6 laps and Chris McCart made a great hit and pass to lead the seventh lap and escaped further car damage long enough to take the checkered flag for the win on lap 15. Josh Hector set fast time and a new track record for the class for the second week in a row at 17.43. Hector also won the heat and the dash.
The 30 plus mile an hour crosswinds made jumping conditions highly dangerous for Beau “The Basher” Bamberg and Torin McIntyre. The two Freestyle Motocross daredevils made 10 jumps apiece in a shortened exhibition called because of the dangerous wind. On a number of jumps across the 85 foot distance, the two riders nearly missed the landing ramp. For safety sakes the exhibition was cut short. But not before Basher had executed a couple of back flips, two with hands off the handlebars and brought good sized crowd to it’s feet.
Ephrata Raceway Park returns to action Saturday night June 14th as the Sage and Sun Festival race weekend features the WMRA Midgets, the Golden Wheels Vintage Sprints, the Kim Janke State Farm Agent Youth Hornets and the 360 Sprint Cars.
