Jimmy Sills Classic at the Stockton Dirt Track on Tap for Buddy Kofoid and Van Dyke Motorsports

By Gary Thomas

Stockton, CA – April 11, 2018…After wet weather dampened their spirits last weekend Penngrove’s Michael “Buddy” Kofoid and Van Dyke Motorsports are amped up to head for the Jimmy Sills Classic this Saturday with the Sprint Car Challenge Tour presented by Elk Grove Ford and Abreu Vineyards.

The event held at the Stockton Dirt Track honors National Sprint Car Hall of Famer Jimmy Sills and doubles as the second round of competition for the Sprint Car Challenge Tour. Kofoid piloted the Van Dyke Motorsports/ Gary Silva Ranches No. 5H to a runner up finish at the SCCT opener and goes into Saturday ranking third in the standings.

“We had a really good run at the Sprint Car Challenge Tour opener on March 31 and hopefully can improve one position on Saturday in Stockton,” commented the 16-year-old. “Last weekend we didn’t run anywhere so I’m definitely looking forward to getting back in the seat. There should be a lot of cars and a lot of great competition.”

So far in his young career Kofoid has experienced success at the Stockton Dirt Track, although he is still looking for his first win at the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds facility. Last season in the four Sprint Car Challenge Tour events held at the venue he brought home finishes of third, fourth, sixth and eighth respectively. On Saturday he hopes to stand atop the podium for the first time in Stockton.

“The Stockton Dirt Track is definitely one of the bigger, faster places we run at in California and I enjoy racing there,” Kofoid said. “Last season we were really consistent in Stockton and that gives me a lot of confidence going into Saturday’s event. It’s one of those tracks that has a strong fan base, so it would be pretty special if I could get my first win there this weekend. The weather looks great and should make for an outstanding show.”

This Saturday’s outing will also be a good warm up for the following week’s Asparagus Cup that runs in conjunction with the San Joaquin Asparagus Festival. Kofoid and Van Dyke Motorsports are scheduled to go after the $10,000 top prize on April 21. The event is the highest paying one-night stand for Winged 360 Sprint Cars in Northern California.

Adult tickets this Saturday April 14 at the Stockton Dirt Track will cost $20, kids 5-10 will be $10 and those four and under are free. All seating will be general admission, the front gate opens at 4pm and cars will hit the speedway at 5pm. Online tickets are available at

The Stockton Dirt Track is a lightning fast 4/10-mile clay oval located on the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds in Stockton, California. The physical address is 1658 S Airport Way, Stockton, CA 95206. For information on the speedway visit
